Why don't people want my money?!

Is it just me that finds businesses just don't actually want their money?

We need some work done in the house, I've been trying endlessly to get someone in, nobody ever calls back
I even went to a family members friend thinking surely they won't let me down - yep I'm up to 3 unanswered messages

We need a dog sitter for when we go away, I went on a couple of dog sitter sites and I've messaged and messaged and messaged people, and nothing
One guy rang me, we had a good phone call he said he'd check what day was best with his wife for us to visit and text me, the day came and went with no word from him so I gave him a text, nothing

Trying to book my son a birthday party, got through to someone, he said he's not in the office he'd ring me back in an hour - this was yesterday at 10am and still haven't heard from him

Why don't people want my money!?!! Argh!

We have the same issue. We also find when buying stuff that if we've set a budget, decided on the quality of what we want that the sales people are constantly trying to talk us out of the more expensive options, or suggesting ways to cut costs. Even when we say we want the more expensive option they carry on.

Same. It's frustrating!

Decorator here. Had one out to quote still not heard back from him despite chasing (that was April).
Emailed and phoned another for a quote no reply or call back (end of May)
Currently waiting on 2more getting back to me but I'm not hopeful!
It's a straightforward job (if you know what you're doing/have the right tools, so the first decorator told me) but no one wants to do it Angry

We got a call back from a wedding venue 6 weeks after I emailed them to ask for a viewing. We'd already booked somewhere else.

Yeo, I had the same looking for some double glazing. Double glazing FFS. They used to knock on your door and hassle you in the olden days!

We've had three different window cleaners turn up once and never again - we did pay them the first time!
It took me four attempts to hire a car for my wedding, only one could give me a quote on the spot. Another finally rang back days later. Guess which I went with?
My parents spoke to five different builders for some work on their house. Only one was honest upfront and said he couldn't do the work.
I don't know why some businesses are so bad. If they don't want the work or just can't do it due to other stuff, they just need to say!

So, for all those professions detailed above, there is more demand than supply, in their respective locations.

Great news for anyone looking for a job.

I have had this with roofers, plumbers, anyone that can do fencing and window cleaners, all in the past 12 months, for each I have called 5 -6 numbers more than once, very few even replied - none turned put to price the job! That is at least 20 trades people I cannot give my money to, though I want the jobs done and have the funds to do them, yet they like to moan there is no work around, so frustrating.

I'm glad it's not just me who gets people recommending cheaper options, StealthPolarBear. Plus quotes for items of building work 'a lot of money'.

They don't call you back because they're too busy. At a guess.

It's not them it's you! Wink

Only joking I've had this with service people. Must be taking it in!

The tradespeople round here are really busy. The economy is getting better and they're seeing the benefit of people having more disposable money. The local mobile hairdresser and nail woman aren't taking on new clients - same reason. Local estate agents busy busy busy.

This is a general problem with tradesmen. They don't call you back because they are too busy.

We have had this with Gardeners, Plumbers, Builders and Cleaning companies. No one calls back, or they do a quote then don't actually want the job. One guy (the third gardener/builder) to quote and agree to a price said he was busy for 2 months and would we mind waiting, didn't turn up on the agreed start date then i had to chase for 3 days before i got a half arsed email saying he had had to go to a funeral on the start date and now didn't really want the job. Well cheers for letting me know. I gave him a bad review on rated people saying he hadn't done any work but was unreliable and stating the facts. This was immediately taken down as 'he hadn't actually done any work so i couldn't review him' (rated people were also very rude and said reliability wasn't an issue it was just the work people were interested in - Hmm i said i expect it was to future customers). Anyway, then he started sending me very unpleasant emails calling me bitter. Confused Which was nice. The job wasn't small, we were paying 2k for a weeks work and people were saying no jobs under 4k were worth it. In the end we went with a local 'odd job' man who charged 800 quid!

My dad is an electrician and he says he used to see jobs and not want to do them so give a really high price and then even if the people accepted it would say no.

I can't for the life of me get someone out to give me a quote for some painting and decorating. I'm looking for them to start in the next fortnight. Not had a single person agree to come and give me a quote.. I've not had a single response to my enquiries Hmm

They might be too busy, but it wouldn't hurt to send a generic message back to this effect. Better than keeping people dangling.

Can I recommend //www.bidvine.com ... had the same problem finding a painter and decorator. Rated People were completely hopeless, but have had quite a few responses from putting the job on this site

I've no idea what the workmen are like, as I've still to contact them, ask for examples of previous work, etc - but at least there've been some responses!!

Um, because they have more people asking for work than hours in the day?

Report

I tried 6 different bathroom installers, the only one who replied was a top bloke who did some work in our kitchen a few months ago. These people are all advertising themselves, why bother if they don't need the work? Same with trying to get someone to lay paving to the front of the house, no joy whatsoever.

When I found a company that could pull up some stupidly overgrown and diseased hedges any were prompt and communicative, half my street (exaggeration but not by much) booked them to do work within a few weeks.

This makes it sound like my house is a shit heap, it isn't, we just bought a bit of a doer upper.
