What dress size are you?

I've just been reading Closer (hmm) and amazed by the celebrities who are 5'6'', 9 1/2 stone, and size 8.
I don't understand. I'm this height and weight and a 12, have always been a 12, and an 8 wouldn't go anywhere near me, top or bottom.
Is it possible to be the same height and weight but such different sizes?
I'm very happy as a 12, just baffled.

5' 4"
No idea about weight - maybe 10 1/2 stone?
Size 10-12 on top and 12 on bottom.

Yes, it's definitely possible. I am 5'8" and at my lightest (a few lbs under 9 and a half stone), I was never smaller than a big size ten (so maybe more of a 10/12). My friend was the same weight and height and wore a size 8! Think that was because of my shape. I'm biggest round the tummy and no clothes accommodate a big tummy very well IMHO. Jeans can't be tight round the tummy so I always had to buy jeans which were too big for my legs. I also am large of nork so tops had to be big enough to accommodate them.

Now I'm 12 stone and a good size 14 (so maybe more of a 14/16). I'm sure other people are my height and weight but wear smaller sizes than me.

I'm 5'5" and at 9 1/2 stone am an 8/10. It depends on build, body fat percentage v lean tissue percentage, how you carry your weight etc. I'm an hourglass and I have quite low body fat as I take weight lifting too quite seriously. I don't wear a 12 until I'm over 10 1/2 stone.

5'8"
10st 4lbs
Size 12. I have wide hips so I'll never be an 8 and if I go more than a couple of lbs under 10st I look ill.

I was medically underweight, but didn't drop below a 8-10, I've got big hips.

My DD has slightly wide shoulders and although she's a 10, in most things, she needs a 12 jacket. I'm fatter than her, but can fit in a smaller size.

Some people are heavier, as well, without it being to do with 'bad' body fat.

I got into weights, last year and the gym that I go to has MMA fighters, or serious training. None of the Women are above a 10, but are heavy.

I was 8'12lb, 5'3" and a size 10. I'm overweight now, because of medication and illness.

im 5 ft 8 and 9 and a half stone.

im a size 12 or 10 in vanity sized shops but very rarely.

maybe a lot of their weight is on bust?

do you have a large body frame?

i do, im broad but lean. even when i don't stretch, you can see all my ribs jutting out.

everyone is different.

I wonder this too op & I always read these threads agog Grin

I'm 5:7 and 10 st 7 pounds.
I'm more size 10 than 12 now... I just lost 7 pounds Halo

Anything under 10 stone for me is really not good, though I would of course like to lose just another 2-3 pounds......

5'2" and 10 1/2 stone... small 12....
For each individual it will depend on shape, how much fat they carry and how it is distributed... also how tight their clothes are... some people will insist they can wear a 12 (for example) and yes they can get into it but it'll be painted on, others will wear their clothes loose...
Also different shops size their clothes differently.

Thank you - I was just wondering whether it was a vain celebrity.
I do have broad hips, sigh.

This is when I like this site. Where else could you have a random thought about dress sizes and find a load of people to respond to you? Thanks everyone.

I'm similar. I'm 5'5" and weight 9 stone 10. I'm a size 8-10. I always seem a lot heavier than my friends who are a similar size and weigh under 9 stone.

There is a host of possible explanations.

  1. Unreliable data. I suspect the slebs and their pr people may release vital statistics that sound admirable rather than their true ones.

  2. Many of them are simply very fit, as hours on a carefully considered fitness regime is part and parcel of being a female celeb. Muscle is more dense than fat, so a very toned woman could be a size 8 and yet unexpectedly heavy.

  3. Size 8 where? They are probably size 8s in expensive, well-cut clothing that works for their body shape. Ask any woman with a waist and appreciable boobage what difference it makes! Like me I go from a 14 in anything straight-up-and-down (fits my chest but is baggy everywhere else) to a fitted 8-10 on my top half, and I'm not alone.

I'm 5'4", 8st 3lbs (this was my weight at my booking appointment for this pregnancy), and wear a size 8 usually.
I think it depends on where on your body the weight I distributed if that makes sense?? My sister is the same height as me, and we were always the same weight, give or take a lb or two when we were going to the gym together - but she wears a size 6 on her bottom half. The difference is, she has tiny hips and bum, but her norkage is a lot more ample than mine!

Definitely something to do with body shape.

I'm 5'6" and have been every weight from 9st 4lbs to 18st.

At 9st 4lbs I'm an 8-10. 8 on the waist and 10 elsewhere.

I can fit in a 12 at 10.5-11 stone.

Depends on body shape. I'm 5ft 8. When I was 9.5 stone I was probably an 8 waist, 10 hips, 12 thighs, 10-12 bust, 12 upper arms!!!
