DD has more or less 100% attendance - has had one day off and missed maybe 5 hrs in total being taken out for various hospital appts this year.
She has an appt in a different hospital next week - in Scotland so it is the last week of term and the exams are finished. This hospital is 50 miles away.
Her appt is midday and should last an hour - but guess by then it might be one of the last in the clinic so it might be running late..
Directly from home it is just over an hour's drive on reasonable, mostly familiar roads - I'd give myself 1.5hrs so leave plenty of time in case I get stuck behind a tractor or I can't park or find the right dept or something...
From DDs school it would take me 30 min to drive there to pick her up and then be a 1.5hr drive to the hospital -without leaving extra time.
Looked at public transport - she could (in theory) get a bus from her school to a train station, I could go and met her there but because of a longish walk/bus journey at the other end it would still take 1.5hr and I'd have the stress of her missing the bus so the train etc and there is only one train an hour...
She really could -or should at least - go in to school for 1-1.5hr in the morning and possibly back for an hour in the afternoon...
but WIBBU to keep her off for the day mainly just to make it easier for me -both in driving distance and stress?

Just keep her off. Tell the school that due to distance and the unpredictability of the timing in the clinic you cannot get her to and from school.

She will probably get an unauthorised absence. I would send mine in first.

At that distance I would just explain to the teacher she'll be off the next day, as she has to go to x for an appointment and it's y, that awkward time of day. The school will understand. If you're late you risk being turned away and the appointment rescheduled, possibly months away.

Ok - no-one thinks I am just being lazy ...which I think I am really...
I was drafting the permission letter for the full day and then felt guilty ...
Would they really give her unauthorised absence for this?
They are thinking of transferring her to this hospital for everything - not only will she have check ups in the day (like this) every few months but will also have to go to an evening thing every 3 months...
If they do I will get appts at better times etc and I guess I will know where I'm going -she can't miss a day for every one - but as a one off....
I really hope they don't transfer her - current hospital is within walking distance of her school - she has only missed so much school cos the clinic more or less always runs really late ....and she has got to know and really like her consultant ...will actually speak to her rather than looking at me to answer for her!!!
Anyway full day off it is - will say what 3little frogs said...
(might take her somewhere for lunch afterwards -make the most of it)

Take the whole day and explain why to the school, far too stressful to do anything else and she won't settle at school beforehand anyway
