AIBU?

To think that Nigel Farage should not be allowed any airtime

Apologies if there has been a thread but I couldn't find one:

IMO this is the real Nigel Farage

www.newstatesman.com/2016/06/nigel-farage-s-anti-eu-poster-depicting-migrants-resembles-nazi-propaganda

yet we allow him to appear on our television screens and listen to him as if he is a normal person.

Aibu unreasonable to think that beneath his friendly man down the pub veneer lies an out and out racist determined to plant hatred in people's hearts and minds Angry.

And I have added to his publicity by creating a thread about him Angry.

Depends if you want to live in a democracy or a totalitarian state. I prefer a democracy myself.

I don't allow him to appear on my tv screen, if he does appear he gets switched off. There are others who also provoke this reaction (not all of them are politicians). I am very glad we have a new tv with a working remote control as this means I can switch him off a bit quicker these days :)

We let him on TV because millions of people voted UKIP at the last election.
I hate the man, but he should be allowed on TV imo.

" as if he is a normal person."

He is a normal person, voicing the thoughts of many more normal people.
You don't have to agree with him, but do you think that anyone you don't agree with should not be allowed 'airtime'? sounds a bit totalitarian to me tbh.

It's a democracy and he has the right to express his views, however unsavoury, as long as he doesn't break any laws.

I'd rather people see him for what he is than hide his obnoxious views away.

IMO it's not a question of airtime. I think he should be expelled from, ideally, politics but certainly from the front benches.

This vile poster and the vile lies it espouses are in the same bracket as the hate speech of figures like Powell, IMO.

This kind of stuff used to be confined to the fringes but now it seems to be an accepted part of mainstream politics. I don't know why and I think it should stop. I've written to my MP to say so. I may yet write to Shiny Dave to say the same thing. I really hope the police take this seriously.

I don't see why he gets the amount of airtime he does. UKIP has one MP. The Green Party has one MP but she's rarely given any time at all and if she was, what she would say would be in direct contrast to UKIP.

It completely distorts British politics, having Farage on TV all the time.

Censoring him opens the door to censoring you, OP.

If we banned anything we didn't agree with we'd be no better than the Nazis.

Of course he should be 'allowed'. Freedom of Speech and all that.

" the hate speech of figures like Powell, IMO. "

Could you actually quote any 'hate speech' from one of Enoch Powell's speeches?

The whole campaign for both sides has been an endless barrage of propaganda so far as I can see.

I think he's an arsehole, but he would probably think I'm an arsehole.

If he wasn't allowed his say there would be rumblings of a remain conspiracy.

I think he has really crossed the boundaries of what is acceptable. I don't know where or how the line gets drawn but unless we are united against racist sentiment of this kind I think it's a slippery slope to our accepting progressively worse things.

That poster is ripe for a bit of graffiti with a spray can;

'Let them out. Let them all out.'

Any other suggestions?

The people in the poster don't look to me like Nazis? Prince Harry dressed up as a Nazi and he is still allowed on our TV.

Tiggeryoubastard · 17/06/2016 13:36

So because you don't like his views he shouldn't be allowed on to? Err ok then.
He's not my cup of tea but he's as much right as anybody else.
Seeing the murdering profiteer Blair sickens me more, but hey, that's the way it is.

Expelled from politics? How FGS? By whom? Do you know what the term 'front bench' means? Farage is not even an MP!

Oh and if you don't like Nigel, then I suggest you blame the politicians from the main political parties who refused to listen to people's legitimate concerns over levels of immigration.

MariaSklodowska · 17/06/2016 13:38

OK this is what Powell actually said for those of you who have just heard he was a nasty old racist,
" Here is a decent, ordinary fellow Englishman, who in broad daylight in my own town says to me, his Member of Parliament, that the country will not be worth living in for his children. I simply do not have the right to shrug my shoulders and think about something else. What he is saying, thousands and hundreds of thousands are saying and thinking – not throughout Great Britain, perhaps, but in the areas that are already undergoing the total transformation to which there is no parallel in a thousand years of English history. We must be mad, literally mad, as a nation to be permitting the annual inflow of some 50,000 dependents, who are for the most part the material of the future growth of the immigrant descended population. It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre. So insane are we that we actually permit unmarried persons to immigrate for the purpose of founding a family with spouses and fiancées whom they have never seen.[4][5]"

YABU. Can't stand him, but this is a democracy. When he appears on TV, spouting his own particular brand of swivel-eyed lunacy, I exercise my democratic right to silence him.
