AIBU?

"Rape...is not caused by rapists" WTF!?!

If you aren't aware of the rapist Brock Turner and the campaigners who think he's getting a hard time, have a read of this guardian link.

AIBU to think that the statement from Leslie Rassmussen decrying political correctness that harms poor boys like Brock is the dumbest piece of shit I've ever read?

Even in their drunkest, most ridiculous states my Husband, Brothers and adult sons would not rape a woman because, and I'm sure Leslie wouldn't want to entertain this notion, they wouldn't rape somebody because they aren't rapists!!!!

Brock clearly is.
Having sex without consent is rape.
Forcing yourself upon an unconscious person is rape.

You don't have to be a stranger in a dark alley to do that, just your normal, average, everyday twat.

I know it is hard to accept the wrongdoings of a loved one.
I know we'd all fight to protect those we care about but you can still fucking accept the mistakes that people make...even if you can't get your head around it, don't bury your head in the sand and pretend it's less of an abuse because 'he's a nice guy'.
When will people wake the fuck up?

Totally agree.

Decent men act decently. They don't rape and know no means no.

My dh and my adult sons wouldn't be confused by this.

This has been an awful case from start to finish. What did Brock Turners dad say? Something along the lines of asking the judge not to send him to prison for '20 minutes of action'

Absolutely disgusting. He got 6 months - more than likely be out in 12 weeks.

What really upset me about this case was that I am pretty sure that no black defendant ever got a shorter sentence because they were drunk!

It was so a case of the judge being more able to identify with the rapist than the victim.

The Brock Turner trial has been utterly stomach churning. I saw something on Twitter that said women are blamed for being raped if they've been drinking but if a man rapes, it's not his fault, he was drunk and he didn't know what he was doing.

But please read is victim's impact statement. It's amazingly powerful reading. If I had a teenage son I'd make him read it.

And I do wonder what Brock's father's reaction would have been if a man had been caught having '20 minutes of action' with his unconscious son?

Drink brings out what we 'hide'. So your loud obnoxious laugh, racist jokes, true opinion on your friends new boyfriend or indeed your rapist tendencies come to the surface drunk. It's no excuse. The drink didn't make him that way, just gave him the push to act on it. It's disgusting and yes his Dad did say '20 mins of action'. He's not an athlete who made a mistake, he's a rapist who can swim.

Rant over (for now).

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 08/06/2016 11:13

This is the one whose swimming times were listed under the article reporting it. Because he's an olympic swimmer, that somehow mitigates the rape Hmm 6 months is a pitiful sentence.

Anyone in any doubt that what Brock Turner did was a violent rape on an unconscious woman should read about the two students who found/saw him, and chased him down. One was crying so much from what he'd witnessed, he could barely talk to the police.

Sorry for the link fail, seems more people on MN are aware of this though. Nobody in my social circle seems to know about it!

I came across the Victim Impact Statement on FB - it was powerful reading.

I think the vast majority of the thinking world are with the victim (who sounds actually amazing I have to say) and are against Brock-rapist and his Daddy-rapist

I think get statement was one of the most moving things I have read, she is a heroine

And poor brock-raping-cunt is "off his food," as his dad says

diddums

I have followed this story and the man is disgusting, his father is not much better.

Do read a brave woman's tweet when she doctored the appalling statement made by his father. here

I would disagree on this, as the media/worlds voice has been relenting FOR the victim,. and the main news is (a) her statement and (b) disgust its only 6 months

I wish it has never happened, but I hope this is a turning point in so called "campus rapes"

Apart from Brock being caught red handed assaulting the young woman.

I don't know what to say about the case really, it highlights all that is wrong with people's thinking about rape.

It never ceases to astound me the lengths that people will go to to protect and defend rapists. To absolve them of their violence.

Turner's view of women is not surprising given his father's statement, their insistence that this is all a mistake and it was drunken promiscuity disgusts me and all right thinking human beings.

There will no doubt be some women coming along soon to post that had she not been drunk, she would never have been in this situation. There always are. Some of them go to the most ridiculous lengths to back up their rap apologism. I would suggest that they go away, read the victim's statement, give their heads a wobble and pipe down. Her statement should be taught in schools.

God in heaven. This case just keeps getting worse! The entitlement!!!

Please don’t send him to jail/prison. Look at him. He won’t survive it. He will be damaged forever and I fear he would be a major target. Stanford boy, college kid, college athlete

That arsehole should just have written 'white boys don't belong in prison, that's where we send the black kids' and saved himself some ink.

When I read these statements from women, I always wonder how many were victims of rape in the exact same circumstances and weren't in a space to process or recognise that it was rape.

I genuinely hope that Brock Turner gets '20 minutes action' repeatedly while he is serving his shitty, insulting to justice, prison service.

I read somewhere that the judge used to be a volunteer coach at Stanford too (not sure if it's true)

I don't know who I'd like to beat the crap out of more Brock, his fucking arsehole dad for that infuriating letter (poor Brock doesn't eat fucking steak anymore, he's so sad and he's now teaching college students how not to be promiscuous Angry ) or the judge who didn't want to ruin the scumbags life with a long sentence.

I also read the police didn't release his mugshot which is usual protocol, it 'got lost' so prior to court the only photo the press had access to was a year book photo where he was like a gleaming poster boy in a shirt and tie. His mugshot only got released yesterday and he looks like a scummy little shit on it. So I guess the police were bought by his dad too, just like the judge obviously was.

It's disgusting how corrupt the justice system can be if you have money and social standing!

There is a petition to have the judge removed from the bench at change.org as he's up for re election over the next few weeks.

This makes my blood boil, rape is rape. If you don't want to go to prison, don't rape.

Report
brassywind · 08/06/2016 11:37

Rape is NOT caused by anything or anyone other than the rapist. Victim blaming is tantamount to rape denial and only highlights the double standards ascribed by the mass of society.

I've met many rape survivors in my job and they have all been strong women in having the want and will to speak out.

Well, too late now! He should have thought of that before he decided to rape!

Of course he will survive. Six months is nothing. It's an insult to the victim, that's what it is. (I'll write victim when I mean victim. Because it's not an insult. I know how language works, and if we all don't use the word in its original meaning, it will become an insult soon.)
