Our bank account has been cleared out

Today my DH said 'why do we have no money??'
I told him not to be so ridiculous, because we have been working really hard to save money and build up a buffer in our account. So I looked at our bank account: available balance £14.

Someone has used almost £2000 on Next and Foot Asylum purchases, with a pizza and a dessert order thrown in Angry.

The irony is that I never buy from Next because we can't afford for me to buy new clothes. I only ever buy from charity shops or (very rarely) Primark. So the fraud claim is very easy to prove. That and the fact that the man on the phone from the bank had to tell me what Foot Asylum is Grin.

The transactions were all in the last day or so, and were all made using DH's card. We also had a letter today from Next, addressed to a man we've never heard of, thanking him for advising them if his change of address. So Next have given us a fraud case ID number and have put a block on account applications from our address. The bank fraud team will contact us tomorrow.

How gutting. We're lucky that DD1's DLA gets paid into a different account, so we can use that for a few days and reimburse it when we get reimbursed by the bank. If it got paid into the same account we'd be absolutely done for.

Oh how awful. I'm so sorry. That is gutting. Hopefully the bank will give you back your money. Surely they can track the thieves down if they provided a new address?

Happened to us a few years ago and our bank put the money back into our account while they chased it up. Has your DH used his card anywhere dodgy lately? We never use cashpoints now.

The thieving robbing cunts. I hope your money is returned to you ASAP. How did they do it?

This happened to my sister and it was years before she managed to get the money back as the bank (HSBC) were insistent that it was her that bought the stuff.

Trastevere, no, they'd had the cheek to give Next our address!! So I had to phone Next and say 'actually, I don't have an account with you, but you have rather a lot of my money'. They were lovely and had already flagged the account as suspicious because they'd seen that DH's card had been used to pay for goods on two accounts Angry (we have never had a Next account). So they've assured us that they will be in touch with our bank and we can give them their fraud case ID which will help to legitimise our fraud claim.

These people think their crime is faceless but it's our joint wages for a month that they've stolen. Literally all of it. Gone. And the bank clerk said that he thought there was more that he couldn't see yet, because although my available balance was £14, the account balance was £400, so it's likely at least £300 more is fraudulent. It's shockingShock

Well two of the rogue charges are from 192.com so I can only imagine they had the cheek to charge electoral roll searches to DH's card Grin

I had a chuckle with the bank chap - Pizza Hut and Zap Star Sugar Mill Desserts "oh lovely, a celebratory meal for fleecing my account"

Mother fuckers!

I remember a while back that someone racked up a high phone bill on my mums landline. I was young teenage girl who's social life was the most important thing in the world at the time so although mum didn't outwardly point the finger at me I knew she wanted to. After getting a second high bill she tried called the number which had appeared and it was some fraudulent number. She ended up having to pay all the money which she really couldn't afford. Absolutely horrible that these fuckers out there think that this is ok!

I'm assuming that the next clothes were store bought? As if it was internet purchase why would they give your address? If so, hopefully they can catch the twat

Happened to me a few years ago, my card was copied at a petrol station in the north of England and then used for three transactions in Paris, around 1500 euros. I could prove that i was not in Paris on the dates in question so it was a fairly straightforward claim and was sorted out fairly soon. Hell of a shock though and bloody inconvenient. i hope you get a quick resolution.

Will you manage ok? This is appalling :(

DHs card was cloned (we think) at a dodgy petrol station.

lougle · 04/06/2016 22:59

No definitely Internet purchases, I think, because there were 6 purchases made at Next and 4 made at Foot Asylum, all between £90- £300 - I think they've just kept going until the card was declined, maybe.

I'm kind of glad it's clothes and trainers. We last bought trainers a good couple of years ago and never buy clothes. We won't have to convince the bank that DH didn't make the purchases.

Oh lougle I'm so sorry to hear about this. Angry

I have to say though you are handling it brilliantly. I'm not sure there would be any grins from me. Good on you for not letting the fuckers win.

As an aside my next parcel didn't turn up today - it's not at yours is it?!

Flowers Chocolate I'm sorry, that's such a horrible thing for someone to do. I hope it's resolved soon and you get it all back.

How awful for you. When someone opened some fraudulent accounts in my name I was advised to join CIFAS. It adds an extra layer of security if someone tries to open something in your name. It cost about £15 for a year, I think.

It's awful.
DH has had this happen twice. 2 separate bank accounts, Lloyd and Natwest.
First time the thieving arsewipes ordered a Fortnum and Mason hamper online, none of yer Lidl stuff, oh no! Shock
and the second time bought expensive jewellery from a shop in Scotland. We live as far south as you can get!
What I didn't grasp was if they ordered the hamper to be delivered why can't the police intercept it somehow if there's a delivery address Confused
DH got the money back but it's just hassle cancelling cards etc

I don't understand how people like this think they'll get away with it. With Internet shopping, surely you have to put your address to receive the goods? So the police can find out who it is in a matter of seconds? Always wondered this if anyone can clarify.

Anyway, how annoying for you and I'm sorry. As a teenager, I stupidly asked a 'friend' to get 20 quid out of the cashpoint when he went to the shop at a house party. He cleared out my bank and the police wouldn't do anything as I was stupid enough to give him my PIN number. Hope it gets sorted soon Flowers

This is the reason I have one card that I use for petrol and nothing else. I have heard so many stories about cards being cloned in petrol stations. I wonder why that is?

I bank with First Direct and they are brilliant - they ring me if they spot the tiniest irregularity or anything unusual on my account.

Santander OTOH are awful. My DS was forced to empty his account at a cash point with a knife held to his neck by his assailant. It was captured on CCTV but they still refused to re-credit his account. I would never bank with them.

OP- I m sorry this happened to you, but glad your bank have been helpful.
