AIBU?

To be annoyed about this or just being pedantic?

I've name changed as I am a regular and dh knows my usual name.

Am I being really pedantic about this or am I right to be annoyed?

Dh took our cat to the vet, vet said cat was a little overweight asked what he was feeding it, instead of telling the vet food and amounts he lied and said he thinks someone else in the neighbourhood is feeding it too!

I asked him why he lied and he said he didn't want to get into trouble or look like an irresponsible owner. I am so annoyed because instead of being honest so the vet could give us information she just said speak to the neighbour.

Not only that but he had our teen dd with him and so she also knows he lied, he knows how I feel about lies and liars and how I tell dd that it's not ok to be untruthful and there he is barefaced lying to the vet!!

He's not normally like this I don't know what he was thinking, so AIBU to be pissed off with him or should I just let it go?

Well it was definitely silly....but I understand his reaction...I get a bit scared of medical people too.

It won't be hard to cut back on the chubby little floof's cats' food. Grin What's he currently eating per day?

He was probably embarrassed in the same way that adults lie about their eating or drinking habits. I think you're being a bit harsh in your post.

Just give the vet a ring and ask for dietary advice, or post in the litter tray topic.

Oh, come on. "Lies and liars?" Let it go. And put Fatty on a diet.

I your cat is over weight it's not that difficult to cut it down. Is it being fed treats? Can you cut its meals down a little? Make it go out more?

I get why he did it. He was on the spot and made a silly decision. Your Dd is a teen, seeing her dad lie isn't going to make her think all lying is ok, if she currently doesn't.

Personally I would say 'well that was daft' and leave it at that.

I'd have probably said the same😳

Cut back on food and cut your dh a little slack.🙂

Teens getting to find out their parents aren't paragons of virtue in a gentle way like this is no bad thing.

Feed the cat a bit less or buy one of the decent foods for overweight cats.

OK, not ideal but not a huge deal. At least it's much easier for you to cut back on your cat's food than have to identify a "neighbour" who may be feeding him too (reminded me of Six Dinner Sid). As for the lying - as a PP said, we all have faults and I'm guilty of mouthing "I'm not here!" to DD if someone telephones and I don't want to speak to them ....

Sounds like the kind of thing I'd say if I panicked.

I think you're overreacting and giving your dh a hard time.

I doubt your dd will judge her dad Smile

This sounds like something I would do in a panic.

Right so consensus is I'm being too harsh Grin he's a prat for lying but think he knows that now!

Cat eats half a pouch of whiskas in the am and a full pouch at night, we give some biscuits but I suspect we've been giving too much.

Tried getting cat to eat a better quality food but no matter what I try nose is turned up followed by a displeased miaow. She miaows every time you go into the kitchen. Always seems hungry. We don't give treats very often.

It's a daft thing to say on the spur of the moment. I think you're overreacting.

It will be the dry food they need a scarily small amount.

Er ... give it only half a pouch in the evening and not so many biscuits?

Try posting in the litter tray, I've had some excellent advise on there. Could be medical reasons your cat always seems hungry.
And yes you are being a little bit U!

I'm sure there have been whole threads on here about 'stupid things i have blurted out without thinking'. Quite funny too! I don't think it's anything to get worked up about

I feel like I read somewhere that cats don't tend to gorge themselves in the same way dogs would if they could, something to do with better nutrient selection, so actually benefit from having food available all the time rather than set meals? But I type this with a large Tom cat who weighs the same as a toddler slowly pulverising my internal organs so what do I know!

LyndaNotLinda · 01/06/2016 08:15

Yeah dry food is scary calorific. They need less than 100g/day if they're not eating anything else

I'd have fibbed as well, and I'd have accepted that the vet knew I was fibbing but trusted me to give the fat beast less food without expert advice.

TormundGiantsbabe · 01/06/2016 08:20

I wouldn't have said that's too much food as my cat eats four pouches a day Blush but won't eat biscuits. Had a check up recently and vet said her weight was fine. She's just turned 3 but maybe she's still in teenage appetite mode?

Only one pouch a day doesn't seem that much to me at all.

I have two cats who share a bowl so I don't know individually - but I put down a full tin of whiskas in the morning and another in the evening and they have a bowl of cat biscuits down all the time, which generally gets topped up every other day.

Tbh I've never known a cat to overeat themselves - my mums cats are overweight but that's the extra titbits she gives them (meat, cheese, cream) pretty much every day.

Do you have or can you get a cat flap op? Mine are in and out all day and night, it probably does good for exercise purposes, having free reign to come and go.

The cat will always miaow when you go into the kitchen. It doesn't mean its hungry, it's just a try on.

You need harder hearts.

My cats try and convince me and DH they are starving to death several times a day and will get two dinners out of us within 20 minutes if we don't check who's fed the cats as the cats will claim they have never ever been fed before in their lives.

And definitely don't follow the advice above to leave food available all the time - no the don't quite gorge themselves like a dog but if it's there, it will get eaten and if they are leaving food behind your portions are way too large.

Trouble is cat might be diabetic and by lying about how much it is fed vet has not got genuine picture of symptoms to assess or know whether to do blood test.
