AIBU?

To feel flattered by this

Today I delivered some items to a company, and whilst the owner was writing a cheque his assistant signed for the goods. I looked at his surname and asked if it was Romanian. He looked shocked for a second, then broke into a big smile. We spoke for a couple of minutes and then he asked how long I'd been living in England. He did the Shock face again when I told him I was born here.

Tbh, this isn't the first time an Eastern European has assumed I'm an immigrant. But every time it does it makes me feel good about myself, something I don't often do.

Well whatever makes you happy I suppose.

I've never been asked if I'm an immigrant so can't comment on how good it would make me feel.

Is it because your parents are Romanian?

Is it because of the cheekbones?

Flattered by....? Where was the compliment?

Sorry. Blush Most people assume he's Polish. He was just astonished that I, an Englishman, deduced that he was Romanaian. I apologise for unintended dripfeeding.

Still doesn't explain why someone assuming you are Eastern European makes you feel special? I don't get it Confused

Why do Eastern Europeans assume you are an immigrant? Looks, name, language?

What is it about this that you find flattering?

Well Ghoul, that his name looked how a Romanian name would gave me a clue. Apparently most English men don't bother to differentiate.

Navy, every other English person presumes he's Polish. I am apparently the first Englishman to get his nationality right and he was impressed. And I was chuffed at his delighted reaction to my comment.

Going to hit my scratcher now, so won't comment till tomorrow. Goodnight Mumsnet, I really fucking love you.
