To hate modern school assembly songs?

Following on from a recent thread about those bloody awful modern class photos.

When I was growing up in the 90's we used to sing religious based songs like All Things Bright and Beautiful and Who Put the Colours in the Rainbow? Now they sing bloody weird shit about school rules, one about the lunchtime queaue. A few even have raps in them! They are hideous and to be quite frank, mostly drivel. For some reason I really pine for the songs I sang as a child.

It's nothing to do with school assemblies becoming more secular either, because they have to have collective worship as part of the curriculum and still say the Lords Prayer, hear Bible stories so I don't understand why they can't sing proper old songs?

I teach in an independent school and it's all Jerusalem and I Vow that thee my Country so not a phenomenon I recognise! Sounds awful though.

I hate singing in schools in general. It's pointless!

I love 'Don't Build Your House On The Sandy Land'!

I still sing school 'hymns' to myself to cheer me up.

I hate that "autumn days" one we have to sing every harvest service especially these bits:

"Clouds that look like familiar faces
And a winter’s moon with frosted rings
Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces
And the song the milkman sings"

"Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled"

What a load of absolute DRIVEL.

Funny you mention this as I had this conversation yesterday at family assembly. For the first time in 3 years up popped the title of one my friend and I recognised. All Things Bright And Beautiful.....

Then the music started. TOTALLY different tune! They usually do songs that sounds almost like a rap. One song is about teachers in their pyjamas. As a result of thinking about the rap one I now have one going round my head. Lol

What on earth does the song about the lunchtime queue say? I don't know that one!

IOne reason some of us work full time to pay school fees... for the hymns....

For some reason the state sector seems to have totally dumbed down on music and yet so many children from all kinds of backgrounds learned so much from classic English hymns, the words, the harmonies. It got them into choirs.

We had a local Christmas event withs tate school s on a parade of shops. I thought okay here I can ocver come my prejudice against state school music and may be they willdo better stuff than my children's private school but no - it was absolutely dreadful, low quality, not even really singing a tune and awful music. Yet it costs absolutely zero to sing good music in state schools so why don't they do it? It is not like having to fund expensive violins. We all have a voice.

Also tell the schools - make sure they realise what parents want and children need. There is nothing special about my sons that at primary level they were singing in Messiah as boy trebles. Any state school could organise that if they were so minded. If we want to ensure social mobility we need to improve music in state primary schools.

My chidlren's father plays the organ at many weddings and funerals. He often has to ensure people hire at least one singer otherwise every hymn ends up a organ solo.

Sing every day at home. Buy tapes for the car. Make singing a part of normal life. It makes you feel really good sing. It's about the oxygen and use of lungs and meeting other people.

On the flip side, at Easter service they always sing There Is A Green Hill Far Away and most of the parents don't know that one.

I think schools should email parents before events with a link to the music and words so they can practise beforehand. It would just take a few seconds to send when they send out the notice of the event to the parents by email anyway.

Ours still sing the classics. I want colours if day at my funeral so glad the kids get plenty of chance to practice it. I love cauliflowers fluffy too!

The lunchtime queaue song is hilariously awful. Think lyrics along the lines of my tummy is rumbling and I can't wait to see what the dinner ladies are serving today.

There's another one that goes "Please Miss, she flicked a rubber at me. Please Miss she stuck her tongue out at me". Who the hell even writes this shit?

Complete dross. It's creeping into more and more weddings too.
May just about be suitable for a toddler group sing song, but a wedding? Just no.
Each to their own though Wink

I agree Op, the modern songs are rubbish. I loved the hymns we sang in assembly; At The Name of Jesus and Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus were two of my favourites as a child. Never hear them now Sad

At our school we sing lots of 'modern' songs but the worst thing is that they all have an accompanying soundtrack with American singers, so now all the children sing with American accents!

I love all the ones you hate. Autumn Days and One More Step Along the World I go. Anything from the Come and Praise book is fine by me. 😁 I don't like the modern ones, not least because I have no idea of the tunes.

Seriously, Future ? What a strange attitude. Singing has lots of positive benefits. In what way is it 'pointless'?

Lol our school have an eco song sung to the tune of black eyed peas I've got a feeling.

It goes something like

Turn of the lights
Pick up your rubbish
Don't take the car

It's all very weird I'm not sure the kids even like it.
