AIBU?

To be raging at DH

I'm due to start my period any minute day so please be warned that I will not accept that I am in any way BU...

We had a small plumbing problem, it was contained and not causing any hassle/damage. DH thought he could fix it, so drained the entire system causing 'air-locks' apparently and now we have no water other than the cold tap in the kitchen.

I suggested, before he started that we call a plumber but no, he could have a go... Now we need an emergency plumber tomorrow and I won't be able to shower before work in the morning. He has form for this, assuming that he can fix something when it is clearly beyond his ability. So a small job turns into a massive job and we have to get someone in anyway after he has screwed it up

I am having to boil the kettle to get hot water, to wash up all the things I have had to empty from the dishwasher. I have a headache, am pre-menstrual and feeling murderous.

He thinks he is in the right because the original small problem is fixed, I we all know that he is in the wrong, it is only fixed because there is now no water!

If you have running water in one tap on a sink or bath hold flannel or sponge over bottom of working tap whilst running water so that you are forcing the water back up.

This should get rid of the air and the non working tap should work.

I Google drive when we had a similar problem and it did work (Although can be a bit faffy).

Thank you sissy if I can bring myself to talk to him without swearing I may mention it! I couldn't listen to the entire diagnosis story of the fuck up as the red mist descended but suspect it is beyond him now.

Fix it yourself. Watch a YouTube. That'll learn him.

run I will bloody fix it, by recognising my limitations and calling an expert! He was climbing into the loft and everything, I have zero desire to do that!

RB to be fair he did start to boil the jeffing kettle but I was too angry to let him continue Confused that may have been my only Umoment

Oh, I'd be leaving a man like this... :-)

I NEED my bathroom and loo to work properly. Especially on my period.!

Fuck that. Get a plumber in...

Report
HelenaJustina · 19/05/2016 22:04

I would, but it is 10pm. He didn't start messing around until 5.30 or so, just in time for professionals who could have remedied the situation to clock off.

I'm going to bed with tea and chocolate, passive aggressively not offering him one... That'll learn him!

It's likely that the cold water in the tap on kitchen is coming straight from the mains, it's unlikely to be an air lock in all the taps, shower etc. Do you have a combi boiler?

Report
SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 19/05/2016 22:08

Is the cold water fownstairs your only mains fed tap? If so that is why it is working.

Report
SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 19/05/2016 22:12

And the dishwasher and wcm should also come off that mains feed so should work. If you have an electric shower think that is mains too so it might work. if you have a mixer, tank fed shower then it might not work.

Either that or he has switched mains off and not put it back on again?

Get yourself to a hotel, sod the dishwasher, have a nice long shower and refuse to come back until it's done.

Of course you are not being unreasonable.

Get good plummer on speed dial and just tell him plummer is on way next time!

You have my heartfelt sympathies. My husband watches YouTube videos and phones a plumber friend in a faraway city from time to time, and therefore thinks he is qualified to plumb in our new bathroom.
Many many trips to Screwfix, much guddling around under the floor, lengthy periods of time with no water, a fortune spent on tools for another bit of the job, dust all over my house, two floods under the floorboards... And six weeks down the line, I'm still waiting for my second bathroom! Loo and sink done but no shower.
He is too Scottish 'careful' with his money to pay a plumber. Confused

If you just want to get the airlock sorted and the water running again, it shouldn't take longer than 5 mins and isn't a messy job and doesn't require special tools.

It's basically running boths taps so that the water flows back up the tap with the airlock and unblocks it. (Disclaimer - not professional advice but I have had to resolve airlocks numerous times due to an old system!).

There are videos on Youtube which will guide you through it depending on whether you have mixer taps etc.

OP, try what Sissy and Random suggested....unless you'd rather keep moaning about your DH of course. Hmm

My DH is a plumber/ heating engineer he can offer some advice here if you want it? He's asked where was the issue that was "fixed", what your DH has turned off and what heating system have you got i.e. Is it a combi boiler or a normal boiler with a copper cylinder/storage tanks in loft .....
