I see so many posts with things like "when i'm doing my hobby" "DH spends 2 hours a week doing his hobby" "a friend from my hobby"

WHAT ARE ALL THESE HOBBIES?

I've never heard anyone say this in RL
"so what you doing tonight?"
"oh you know, i'm going to do my hobby"

It makes me all nosey and agitated trying to work out what these hobbies are

I reckon it's Painting-by-Numbers or Kazoo practice.

Grin

I always imagine a hobby involves other people doing said hobby with you. Round here it's things like quilting or flying model aeroplanes. That sort of thing seems like a hobby to me.

People are just being vague. IRL people say, My friend from Yoga or DH was playing gold all day or I've been to my ceramics class or whatever

Pole dancing?

I've definitely felt this too! Makes me feel I should have a hobby other than drinking wine in the kitchen

No idea!
I suppose thinking about it some more, it may be pottery, sailing, life drawing, jewellery making, dance classes, ice skating...
But yeah, I'm always a bit mystified when I read about all the hobbys. Mine are eating, drinking and reading!

Oh I do yoga... Is that a hobby?

It just means running, gym, golf, tennis...people don't want to out themselves by giving details.

But why not jsut say "was out meeting up with my quilting club"
I always imagine it's something a bit embarrassing like dogging or those peoplthat invent self appointmetn very important people groups who try and stop the council from building flats on pointless bits of grass so that people have somewhere to live

Agree with gabsdot that it's people being vague on MN, in case their campanology habit outs them.

In a completely unreasonable way I think of hobbies as a male thing, and said so in a job interview when asked did I have hobby. I said I had the gift of repose.

I'm going to start referring to me stuffing chocolate in my face whilst watching eastenders as my hobby, i mean i do do it at set times 4 days a week so i guess that counts, right?

The quilting club does look v interesting. Everyone takes their sewing machine to the local village hall and sit and do it all afternoon. I would imagine the gossip is gold.

I always imagine a group of men in their forties and fifties in sensible woollen jumpers either playing model trains in a converted garden shed or at a pub quiz when I hear the word hobby.

I posted a thread once and people asked what the mysterious "hobby" was... For me it's singing in a choir.

For others I imagine it may be playing dungeons and dragons in a basement somewhere

How about battle re-enactment? That must be a proper one.

Or potholing/sailing/rock climbing etc.

I feel like i should get a hobby. a lady at work the other day asked me what my passion was and i was shocked that normal people have passions.
All i could think of was that i quite enjoy reading people trying so hard to be 'mean but not mean' to eachother on mumsnet

For me - an hour each Saturday and Sunday training with PT, and 2 hours every Saturday at my Mandarin class.

Boring/smug (can be taken either way) so can see why people wouldn't necessarily say what it is Grin

YABU, it's just to avoid outing oneself. tennis / gym / bridge / pilates / line dancing etc

Yes. Yes.

People who are behaving suspiciously with other people with whom they share a hobby. What?? Never ever heard of this hobby-sharing phenomenon in RL.

When I read these threads, in my head the hobby is always fishing, as in angling...no idea why, although I think embroidery cropped up once.

It's just being vague to avoid anything too outing.

I mean, if you started talking about model railway clubs / historical re-enactment societies / scrabble club etc, it'd really narrow it down if someone were to think "ooh, I wonder if is my friend Jane"

My hobby could be teenage taxiing. I do it every single day.
And I do love a Sudoku puzzle.

I must admit I always thought a hobby was something you did on your own in your shed or somewhere like that.

Making a model of St Paul's Cathedral out of matchsticks is a hobby. Yoga or Art is a class. Golf is (believe it or not) a sport. In my mind, anyway.
