Not expecting them to be across all the stuff kids play on their computers but Minecraft has had such a lot of press about its educational value and potentinal application as a teaching tool, surely it should at least be on her radar. She had never heard of it (and by Head Teacher, I mean Head Master/Mistress)

I always knew them as Headmasters and Headmistresses so am not used to Head Teacher (showing my age obviously). I'll admit to being surprised that the HT hadn't heard of it. I thought she might have heard about it in relation to debates about how kids are learning differently these days and the massive impact computers have had on all our lives, and how we might be able to harness our children's interest and use it for educational purposes. Interesting.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic. I'm afraid I didn't understand why the need to specify it was a state school. A school is a school. A headteacher is a headteacher.

That said, the nuns at my convent school wouldn't have been that aware of Bros or New Kids on the Block.

I was surprised to hear that my DC's class teacher hadn't heard of a palaeontologist. You would have thought she might have come across the word teaching loads of dinosaur mad primary children or watching Friends.
I think sometimes people do know vaguely, but can't place the reference if they hear it in a different context.

I specified state school because that is the kind of school my child attends. I'll be honest and say that I would have suspected a Private head might have known about Minecraft because their pupils might all own Ipads and/or have use of them in the classroom and can afford to go on more trips to museums and heritage places that are using things like Minecraft left right and centre in their outreach initiatives.

DS' reception TA asked him the summer before he started if he'd seen the new Avengers film. The one that was rated 12. To a 4 year old.

Point is that schools and teachers can be out of touch.

I must apologise again for my over explanation of Head Teacher meaning Head Master/Mistress. When did it change? Because when I was growing up we always had a Head Master, but my kids have only been in schools where there is a Head Teacher. Also, in my kids' school what I knew as a Deputy Head is called a Depute Head - or is that just a Scottish thing (derails own thread!)
