AIBU?

Is it normal to bang your door into a parked car?

NC for this.

Today I went to the supermarket and parked my car. It wasn't full, and there were loads of spaces to the right of me. The car parked to the left pulled out just as I switched off the engine leaving a gap which was immediately filled. I was just about to get out of my car when the driver of the newly parked car banged her door open. It was quite hard and so I got out to have a look, and there was a tiny mark but nothing that a good polish wouldn't sort out if I could be bothered enough to. It was raining and the woman strode quickly ahead. So I caught up with her and politely asked if she knew she had hit my car. She had a smile on her face but said quite forcefully "really? Are you serious? Loads of people hit the car next to them when they open the door." and walked off. I was so stunned that I did my best impression of a goldfish for a few moments standing in the rain. Then I pulled myself together and got on with my shop.

It's still bugging me though. Because if I ever accidentally hit a car with my door, with someone in it, I would naturally hold up my hand and say sorry if they looked up. Also it would have been understandable if there hadn't been enough room between our cars but there was plenty of room, maybe not enough for her to open the door fully but that's normal in a parking bay situation isn't it?

In any case it wasn't that she hit my car that bothered me. I really couldn't care less as there's barely a scratch. but her attitude? AIBU?

YANBU! How rude and a blatant disrespect for other people's property.
I would be tempted to do it to her car while she's in the supermarket and drive off. In fact you SHOULD do it Grin

No, it's not normal. Most people are considerate and take care not to damage other people's property, that's normal.
Most parking bays aren't big enough to open your door fully, but if you park properly (next to another properly parked car) it's fine. Would she swing her door out fully if it were a concrete pillar or wall instead of your car? I doubt it.

No, not normal at all!

No to most people this is not normal. She is a careless and selfish twat.

YANBU. Her hitting your door accidentally is forgivable & resolvable. Brazenly not giving a shit? Not so much.

Best revenge would be to get her registration & photos, frankly.

I'd have probably said "Oh, like this?" and then bashed into her car. Would end up in a full carpark feud like Lois from Malcolm in the Middle

Ooh I'm annoyed on your behalf op. Sometimes it's unavoidable if the spaces are too small/cars are parked skewiff/you have to open your door wide to e.g. get a child out but most people try not to cause damage other people's property and if they do hit the car next to theirs they'll apologise if they can.
This woman was rude. Can you flag it up with the supermarket? Or await her return and set her straight?

The correct answer OP was
"Then loads of people are arseholes"
Said with a smile!

No, not normal! Not that I'm advocating this, but knowing my temper I'd probably bang my absolute tank of a car's door right back while she's shopping.

YANBU

Bad manners and disregard for others annoy the crap out of me.

No it absolutely isn't normal to throw your car door into the next vehicle. You open your car door carefully and put your hand in the way of the door if it looks like there's a chance the two cars might touch. At least anyone with manners who gives a crap about not damaging other people's cars does.
And I'm really not precious about my car at all. It's just polite.

No, YANBU.
I think tossers that do that to other people property are disgusting. And to advocate it as normal behaviour makes her even worse!
I would say a knock for a knock in this case of you are still parked there OP.

YANBU but it is 100% normal for a lot of people. Last time it happened when I was sitting in my car I glowered at the guy who did it. He looked at me and sad "I don't think I hit your door, did I?" He'd given it a really good smack with his.

Earlier this year I came out of the butchers to see a bloke backing into my car (albeit slowly) - I went to his window, and he initially denied all knowledge until he got out and had to accept that he'd bent my bumper and dented my car.

What seems normal for a lot of people is to either not care or deny anything and everything at all times.

I have taken to driving an old banger 99% of the time so I don't care so much, but I've had so much damage done to my cars over the years.

I hate this too. My car might be old but the selfish bastards who use the car park by my workplace just don't give a shit. My driver and passenger doors look stripey and dented. I have given up trying to t-cut them out.

Exactly this.

As it was raining I imagine she was trying to get inside as quickly as possible. But she never answered my question of whether she was aware that she'd hit my car. Just looked at me as if I was mad for mentioning it even if she had. Confused

Did you get her registration? Out of nothing but sheer badness I would report to my insurance company.

One of my pet hates.....makes me so angry. I can't believe she was so dismissive - I'd have wanted to say something but would've been so stunned to reply. What a dick! X

Has anyone said this already? Sorry if so, but this is why you'll see all the 'naice' cars are parked down the back end of car parks all on their own Grin

To add, i came back to my car a few months ago in a car park and the person next to me had opened their door onto my car and was using it to prop open their door whilst loading it. I came back and saw this and questioned what was going on and was hurled a tirade of abuse by this old bloke who claimed he hadnt done anything. You have to call into question a. Why wont people simply apologise and admit they are wrong and b. Why the hell i would have taken anything up with him if he hadnt been near my car. You have seriously got to wonder about these morons, as i for one just knew he was the sort that would have been the first to complain if i had done it to him! Just total disregard for others.

Yes but when you park your 'naice' car at the far side all on its own, very weirdly, nine times out of ten, you have cars parked either side when you get back to it!
