DH and I work full time and do well - We are super lucky and we know it. We are entitled to nothing. I come from a dirt poor working class background plagued with drugs and unemployment - many of my friends and family are still in this environment. When people at DD's school meet me they'd never ever think my mum would go without food so we could eat. Or that there were times we were sent to beg. I started work a little late today so went to have a coffee with a mum who I am friendly with. She decided to moan about how the council have housed a family on her street who don't work (is she an MI5 agent? How does she have any evidence of this?) and it's not fair because she had to work for hers. She hates the idea of paying a 4k a month mortgage and having to live next to someone who allegedly doesn't pay any rent, a little rent or who ultimately pays around the full 550 pcm for the property. I wont rant but she used the word scrounger a couple of times and went on and on about how the social housing crises is a fad. She said 50% of people on the housing register could actually afford private rent if they wanted to and if the council give you a 2 bed you have no business having 5 kids and adding extra demand to housing. On and on. Some of her comments: Have one child, educate yourself and if you want another child plan one and bloody pay for it! If you wan't to stay at home why should I pay for it? Take your "baby daddy" to court for CSA and pay for your own choices When they give these people 1.5 million quid homes for pittance they are saying "why work hard? Get yourself pregnant and there's a nice house in it for you" I was becoming livid. This is my background, mother, friends and family she's talking about without even knowing it. Yes - growing up loads of us were on benefits but it wasn't bloody fun!! I kept silent throughout the entire rant but did make disapproving facial expressions which were met with "Oh come on you know it's true" When she said "She'll probably have another one next year to see if she can get rehoused to the bishops avenue" I did snap. I said "Can you just shut the fuck up? You sound like you bath in daily mail ink. You can sign up to join the benefits police force around the corner " and stomped off . She looked mortified. She just text me saying I owe her an apology and asked if I speak like that around DD. I don't want it to be awkward but she's really pissed me off! Yes as an adult you cant be rude just because you feel someone is being obnoxious but argh she made my skin crawl. As someone who grew up on a horrid council estate I find the notion of that because you are on a low income you should live in a shit hole disgusting. She owns her home and will inevitably leave it to her privileged children. Her neighbours would never be able to afford their property with RTB. They will never be able to send their kids to the school our DDs go to. They will never be able to travel the world, eat out all the time and dig out a fucking basement. Yes - the council have given them a nice property. But since when was that all there was to life? Since when did the council giving you a victorian and not a shithole mean you were rolling in it?
