AIBU?

To really not like divan beds?

So we're trying to buy a new bed. Simple right? Only DH wants a divan bed as we need storage drawers underneath (small room). I would much prefer a solid wood frame with separate storage drawers but he's worried about the dust collecting in them...it has got to be the most protracted debate we've had in a while (really need to get a life) but essentially I think divans are dated, a bit ugly and I hate you can't judge they're quality as all the materials are inside (if that's make sense). He thinks a plain grey one would look good and there'd be no dust gathering/better storage. Who's right? Aibu and missing something?

What about an ottoman bed?

Lots of storage space and they are great for hiding Christmas and birthday presents from small people.

Divans are the best. You can get some gorgeous ones and I would never have a frame. Frames can be so cheap looking and the slats break. Also he is right about the dust. I hate pulling out storage boxes full of dust. Everything in my Ottoman divan stays clean and I can fit loads in there without having to look at a bunch of clutter under the bed every time I go in there or have some 70s looking valance to hide it. You can just pull a divan out to hoover under/behind it too. Frames you have to move the bed then move all the shit from under the bed, hoover and then put it all back. I think you're nuts!

Frame! Divan storage is rubbish and fiddly. Frames look SO much better too- get an oak one if you can.

Get big storage boxes with lids for under the frame, problem solved!

Hmm, I came on to say I agree with you, as I also hate divan beds. BUT that's only because I like beds that are open underneath with nothing stored under. So a frame with drawers underneath would also be a no for me. I realise this isn't very practical though.

I have seen divan beds look quite nice with a really good quality valance sheet rather than a cheap one which tends to frill out a bit. They are clunky though

I'd go for looks over practicality, but having said that I'd go for comfort above both the others.

If you get a divan make sure you get one of those really nice huge headboards that are fashionable. They can make the room look really classy - and get a good quality valance as a pp said.

Get storage boxes with lids. We have big baskets, they look really nice under the bed.

I agree with you that divans are dated and ugly and are only made worse by valences.

Ikea do some lovely bed bases with drawers in - we have one as a guest bed and use the underbed drawers for bedding etc.

We can't use underbed storage boxes as we have cats and they would squeeze through even the smallest gap and leave anything stored all hairy.

I hate divans, can't even look at them without shuddering. I've tried to like modern trendy ones but I can't. It's the ugliness and the thought of all that boxed in space underneath. I'd much prefer a frame.

I personally hate divan beds, but we ended up getting an ottoman bed because we desperately desperately needed space.

So DH chose the base ottoman, but I chose the mattress and headboard and it is a little old-fashioned but I chose a nice contemporary headboard. It is very comfortable and the extra space is wonderful .

I really don't mind divans. They are cheap and practical and a good base do a decent mattress. The storage is amazing, I especially like the big single drawer in the foot end.

However if you don't link them, what about those ikea malm beds where the entire mattres lifts up to reveal a whole big bed space of storage?

Why not get a bed frame with built in drawers?

I hate divans too.

I have a cheap frame but I spent a fortune on a new mattress.

Divans are hideous.

Some people also put little skirts on them. What's that about.

I'm with you OP. I don't like how divans look, even the 'stylish' ones do look dated and a bit ugly to me, and I like to be able to vacuum underneath beds easily.

A solid wooden bed frame is much nicer Grin

I agree divans are hideous but if you have one, then that little skirt valance makes it look a bit better,

Ooh, we just bought a new divan and it's bloody lovely!
Much comfier than the frame bed we have just now, and I love the built in storage so everything looks tidier.

I hate divans, but we have one because we bought it when I was pregnant and couldn't find a frame high enough for my liking.
Its a dust trap. Our bedroom isn't really big enough to move it around and its really difficult to clean underneath
I wouldn't have another one.

Ooh divided opinion, hmm. I've considered those ottoman things but I don't like the idea of having to move things off the bed to open it, or do you not need to?
Those valance things make me itch.
I do like the idea of a comfy headboard than a hard wood one but it is the look of it that bothers me most. Why do you think yours is s dust trap potty? Is it the type of fabric?
I think what really worries me is that in 5 year time we'll have the equivalent of those nasty padded headboards from the 80/90s and won't be able to change it.
DH still doesn't get it

He also really dislikes the malm stuff the fuss Arse. I quite like it and would be a good compromise. The only decent looking wooden frame I've seen with built in wooden drawers are on loaf.com and I'm not mega keen on them.
Are divans actually more comfy? If so, why?

I don't understand why your DH thinks dust will collect in drawers in a wooden bed base, but not in a divan, which is just the same thing, made out of nasty quilted fabric, isn't it?

I hate divans too but because most are really tall.

I don't have a preference but we used to store things in plastic boxes undercut frame bed and our divan with drawer obviously has less space however our divan is more comfortable. If his only point is storage then he hasn't got a leg to stand on lol

YANBU divans are fugly. Frilly valances remind me of B and Bs in cheap seaside resorts and old ladies' houses. Plain ones not really much better. What about a hybrid upholstered frame like this?

I don't believe dives as a rule can be more comfy. It's choice of mattress that is key to comfort.

Oh an we definitely don't use a valance! That would be gross
