AIBU?

AIBU to ask where I should get a tattoo....

I was been wanting a tattoo for a while now and with my 30th birthday coming up I am biting the bullet and going to get one done next week. I have got my design (a small music note only 2cm big). Ihave some criteria though in order to decide where to have it.

  1. Somewhere that can be easily covered up e.g wrist/foot

  1. Somewhere that won't hurt a lot!

AIBU to ask you all for your opinions on where I could have my tattoo that won't cause me LOADS of pain, and that I can cover up and not show people if I don't want too?

I am told that the wrist and foot/ankle are very painful. Although if you were dresses or short sleeves then it'll still be seen.

I was going to top of back on the shoulder maybe, but if you wear vests then it'll still be visible Grin

Don't start with feet!! You want a nice fleshy bit if you're looking for low pain. Really it depends how bony you are. I'd say the back of your shoulder but I'm well upholstered, it'd be different if you're very slim.

Buttock. Also easy to cover up.

The pain will be over quickly, the tattoo is forever. Get it where you want to have it pain be dammed. It's really not that bad.

Thank you all! Oysterbabe you are right, I just need to forget the pain but having never had one before I'm a bit scared!

Feet are not so easy to cover up either, a lot of shoes still show my tattoos

I have 2. Lower back and ankle, both easy to hide. Neither hurt but I have quite a high pain threshold. I didn't feel anything on my back at all. The hip is one of the easiest places to cover and IMO a musical note will look good there. For something so small though, the pain won't last too long though, so think about where you really want it.

I would go for something big and bang on trend if you want to stand out from a crowd.

I'm wanting to get my first one too, after spending literally years deliberating it. I'm going to go for the back of my neck/top of my back as I wear my hair down often so it's fairly easy to cover up, and easy to show off with an updo when I want to. I know it will hurt like fuck though!

The other place I quite like is inner forearm, near the elbow. Would be easy to cover with a long sleeve top.

I have 5 tattoos; foot, ankle, wrist, chest and tramp stamp (before it was cool lmao!) and you would never know by looking at me.

By far the most painful was lower back and foot, I had medium sized tattoos. The one on my wrist weirdly didn't hurt at all, the vibrations from the machine was all I felt. Ankle one wasn't too bad either. It's a strange pain, burning/sting sensation. You do get relief quite often as the tattoo artist does a line at a time/ fitting up ink

If it's quite a small tattoo, at least it won't be too long to suffer!

Ribs! It's really not as painful as people make out, and I have a low pain tolerance!

Buy some Emla cream from the chemist. Costs about 4 quid. Will numb any area. Jobs a goodun.

Inner wrist didn't hurt that much. Bony bit really really hurt!

Forearm was fine. Bicep / Shoulder was fine but under the arm (triceps?) hurt.

Foot was pretty pain free aside from on my ankle.

Back was generally fine, more painful on spine than elsewhere.

Most painless tattoo was behind my ear.

I am quite tattooed, still manage to cover them for job interviews etc.

Mine are on my wrist and lower back. The wrist wasn't too bad, the lower back only hurt on the spine and the part either side just felt very warm.

Dh has a few tattoos and the worst was the one on his lower abdomen and the part that went onto the underside of his arm.

If you Google tattoo pain guide it will give links to 'pain maps' of the body which show a rough guide to the least/most painful areas. There's one for men and one for women as apparently some areas are more painful for men than women and vice versa.

Don't worry about the pain. It's so small that the pain isn't even a factor for a tattoo like this. Shouldn't take very long at all.

My ankles were the least painful, easy to cover. It's only small so it'll be easy to cover wherever it is

I think a tattoo needs to fit the area it's on.

My two smallest tattoos are behind my ear and on my finger. Bigger body parts have bigger tattoos.

I started with upper back shoulder area. Not to bad. Inner ankle and inner calf were both pretty easy. Chose those area so I could cover and/or they were discreet. Hardest bit with your back can be finding good clothes to show off tattoos. I wear a lot of crop trousers in summer to show leg ones. Almost always wear trousers for work so they are covered. I have my whole back done now. Ouch but I love it 😊

Don't stress about the pain, especially if you're thinking of something that small. Ditto with where you have it done - make sure it's somewhere you like, and you'll be happy with in thirty years as well. Do think carefully about your design.

And make sure you research your tattoo artist, even for small tattoos. You might want to add to or alter it in years to come, and even if you don't, it'll be with you forever, so make sure you like the style of their work.

Thanks everyone, I definitely feel a lot braver now about getting it done and not worrying about the pain as it will be over with quickly and well worth it!

As someone who is covered in tattoos, stay the hell away from the feet! It was by far the sorest place I've ever had tattooed. The tattoo on my foot took about 40 minutes, I had a 5 hour session on my ribs yesterday and would much rather go through that again than my foot.

On your stomach next to your hips sounds like a nice place to have your design, I got my first tattoo there and it was easy enough.
