AIBU?

To think people who refuse to treat colds then moan they feel terrible are annoying?

DH and i both have a sniffle, nothing serious, just a mild spring cold virus.. bunged up, sneezy, slightly sore throat...etc

I will not sit and suffer for the hell of it, i prefer to dose myself up on the cold remedies to alleviate the symptoms, nothing some lemsip and some rest can't fix.

DH however will sit there and sniff and moan.. he feels crap, he's cold, he's tired, he's 'not well' yadda yadda... but you ask if he's taken anything and he says 'No'

Well... STFU and have a lemsip then. grrr. You're not helping yourself by being a martyr the the nasties you know!

None of that stuff works, I find.

I was in my forties before I realised that one of the ingredients in lemsip makes me vomit and I'm far less ill if I don't take it.

Anyway, don't cold remedies reduce symptoms but make the illness last longer? I'd rather have a day or two of resting and drinking plenty of fluids and get properly better than take a couple of tablets and carry on.

I take nothing as it's contraindicated with medication I'm on. But I love a whinge when I have a cold.

Paracetamol and plenty of fluids is the only thing worth taking. All the rest just contain things like paracetamol and are just more expensive.

Best thing is rest and fluids. And fresh air if possible.

YABU ... Don't you know that your DH is not suffering from a cold ... It's Man flu !

I am with you OP, hate people bellyaching about having a cold, coughing germs on me and doing nothing about it.

Nice big mug of lemon and honey never did anyone any harm and makes me feel much better. Might take a paracetamol as well if feeling really rough.

Don't get me going on people who cough and don't put their hand in front of their mouths or use a hanky.......

Is your dh my dh? Are you me?

Do never takes anything, not even paracetamol but is then sooooo ill. It drives me nuts. I'll take whatever I can (I swear by nurofen cold & flu tablets).

When I was pregnant and suffered with cold after cold I told dh that if he caught anything he had damn well better take something that eased it on the basis that i would if I could.

I hear you OP. In particular I find people DH who have headaches for hours and won't take paracetamol but are content to bitch and whine about it irritate me the most and it's totally unreasonable of me to find it so annoying.

I don't take paracetamol unless I'm in pain (people seem to find this quite odd) and decongestants make me ill. I've had a cold on and off (mainly on) for over a month. You're darn straight I'm moaning about it!
I'm sitting here with loo roll stuffed up my nose and a tub of vicks within grabbing distance, feeling quite sorry for myself.

My GP has warned against using decongestants like sudofed as they can actually cause a lot of problems, one of which makes the symptoms stuck around for longer!

I do love some day and night nurse though. Nectar of the gods when I feel dreadful.

Drink a glass of hot orange squash and take two paracetamol - that will have the same effect as lemsip.

Lemsip doesn't 'treat' a cold. And if you feel better after drinking a lemsip, that's probably psychological.

Plus a lot of decongestants/cough syrups and the like can make symptoms worse and can be downright dangerous if used incorrectly - I know two people who have ended up in A&E after taking a cough syrup for 'dry' coughs when their cough was actually productive, because they didn't realise the difference. For this reason I stay clear of all the shizz you can buy for colds.

Paracetamol (if needed due to fever or actual pain), rest, fresh air, lots of water and decent food and a good multivitamin. That's the only treatment that's going to be effective for a cold.

Lemsip is for fools who think it can help with colds, I think it should be taken off the market

Yabu.

Lemsip = utter con.

Just take some paracetamol.

And also colds do generally make people feel crap - the worst bit being you have to work through them and carry on as normal.

Isn't Lemsip just a way to make the paracetamol go down easier for those of us who find it difficult to swallow when we have a cold? I wouldn't call that a con, exactly: it says paracetamol quite clearly on the package.

Otoh paracetamol only helps with pain and high fever, so if the misery is caused by a runny nose you can't exactly "do" anything about it.

Well, I hear you.

DP: I'm so blocked up, I feel awful and full of cold.

Me: oh no, can I make you a hot honey and lemon and get you some paracetamol?

DP: Oh God no, I hate hot drinks if its not tea. Can I have tea? There's not much point taking paracetamol, it won't help (mournful face)

Followed by groan cough sniff groan. If he has a headache and I say have you taking tablets he just looks bemused. Christ I love him but why wouldn't you take something if you know it would help?

Paracetamol helps with cold symptoms. Aches and pains and soreness.
Decongestants do work. Expectorants don't. Just don't be an idiot with decongestants and don't take them with other medications AKA follow the instructions on the box and speak to a pharmacist rather than dealing 10 and hoping for the best.

YABU for using the word " virus".

It's just " cold" or possibly " flu".

I blame the Americans for over medicalising perfectly common illness.

You might be my DH and I may be your DH!
I rarely take any medicine as I'm luckily a fairly healthy person. When I do have a headache or any pain if it's bad enough then I take a pain killer and it sorts it out. Then I get on with my day.
If I have a cold, well that's it. It's a cold. It'll go. I don't think a moan about it though.

DH takes anything going, he's got a stash of lemsips, strepsils, sudofed, laxatives and the opposite of that. U-no-poo or whatever.

He's so over medicinised (fab new word) I'm surprised he functions.

I had a dicky tummy recently and it went on for longer than I would have expected. DH told me to take the U-no-poo and whilst it did what it said on the tin I was messed up for ages, longer than if I'd just put up with my tummy bug for a day or two more.

If it's a simple common problem I prefer to let my body take care of it. But I do try not to moan about it!! Smile

Ummm... ok then.

(FWIW colds and flus are caused by viruses. And there is a marked difference between a cold and a flu. By the sounds of the op it is definitely a cold, not a flu. WAY too many people complain of having the flu when they just have a bad cold.)

DP: "I've got a headache. I feel terrible."
Me: "Have you taken a paracetamol and a glass of water?"
DP: Er...no...
Me: Serves you right.

To be fair, he now goes to take something at the same time as moaning!

The worst is people who moan and then say "but I don't like taking drugs..." They're called painkillers for a reason, it's not like you'd be taking them for shits and giggles! Actually even more annoying is when someone asks how I am if I'm looking visibly more ouchy than usual, like using a stick, I admit to having a bad day and hoping the drugs kick in, and then they go "ooh, I don't ever take drugs, I don't like to." Well count yourself lucky you've always been able to cope without, you daft bint!

Ime different people get different cold symptoms. I get a sore throat- paracetamol very useful. My DM gets a streaming nose- paracetamol useless, and decongestants clearly not much good either decongesting isn't what she needs. My DB always used to throw up- can't imagine paracetamols do much for that. Dh gets a mix of all of those but can't take paracetamol as allergic.
