AIBU to have opened a DVLA letter addressed to someone else (I've never heard of) ...

More of a WWYD I guess. So, letter arrives from DVLA addressed to someone who doesn't, and hasn't ever, lived here. Address is correct right down to exact spelling of my (slightly unusual) road name and postcode. Anyway, it says his direct debit has failed and so his car's not currently taxed but surely he'd know that? as the money's not gone out his bank account.
I know I could seal it back up and return to sender as I opened it very carefully (year's spent opened XH post not gone wasted ), but don't see what they can do about it as he just doesn't live here, and this is obviously the address he's registered his car at so am also more than slightly peeved that he's done this.
Should I send the letter back? or just bin it? Am out this evening so can't reply immed, but await the wisdom of the MN jury.

Send it back. They need to know hes used a false address

If just return to dvla with a note saying not known at this address- I don't see there is much else you can do really?

Type out a letter and print it to the tune of,
"Dear DVLA, please find enclosed a returned letter. I opened it due to not recognising the Addressee. I must inform you that he does not live at this address, i have lived her from 1980 - 2016, my name is: Clarice Winters."
(obvioulsy change the dates and name to suit)

pop it in the envelope, seal it back up, write RETURN TO SENDER on the front and put in the post box.

Definitely return it as above but I would wonder whether he has car finance based on your address too!!!!!

You could have a quick look up and down the road to see if the car in question is parked somewhere as it could be that the house number is incorrect or if you have a regular postie ask them if they recognise the name . Failing that either return to sender or ring them .
