AIBU to expect those who work in food stores to use toilet tissue and wash their hands

That is it really.

I saw a newspaper article a few days ago where a man working in a take away curry restaurant used his own hand to wipe his dirty bottom as his culture did not allow him to use toilet paper. Inside the kitchen was a dirty water bottle covered in faeces that he used subsequently to wash his bottom clean after his poo.

I really feel that those working with food need to use toilet paper and wash their hands after using the toilet for Number 2's BEFORE they re-enter the kitchen and food prep area.

Or is it just me?

Is this for real? Obviously anyone working with food should be following stringent hand hygiene processes. Do you really need to ask?

It's just you because everyone else prefers he doesn't hmmoff course Yanbu

Well that seems a bit obvious. confused Presumably he was in the paper because he had been found out and punished.

I think you are all being very offensive. If its part of his (bacterial) culture, we should respect that.

Sparklingbrook Fri 15-Apr-16 13:34:56

hmm

This is the takeaway in Swindon isn't it? The guy is in court now, so at least it's being dealt with. He's been charged before apparently.

(As an aside, the "bottle covered in faeces" hasn't actually been proved - the inspectors never tested the bottle, they said it "looked like faeces")

Oh it's just you - no one seemed bothered by shitty-hand-sandwiches when I worked in food. Stop being so precious!

hmm

stopandstandup123 Fri 15-Apr-16 13:43:25

Yes, it was in the paper because he was caught out Sparkling but............... OMG..... he thought it was ok to do this until he was caught out.

What on earth made him think this was ok?

I was more shocked that it took an inspection visit to uncover the poo smeared water bottle in the kitchen which must have been there for any delivery person, contractor, colleague to see.

Eurgh.

Sparklingbrook Fri 15-Apr-16 13:44:22

I have no idea why he thought it was ok. confused I am not sure what the discussion here is TBH.

stopandstandup123 Fri 15-Apr-16 13:47:15

Ok Sleepybobo, just me then!! I prefer my sandwiches with mayo or pickle rather than poo.

Maybe I am just a fussy Bu88er xx

Mrsnippycat Fri 15-Apr-16 13:50:11

How did he get caught? I mean, how did the inspector know how he was wiping? Do they ask that? Genuinely curious.

And no, OP, obviously YANBU.

stopandstandup123 Fri 15-Apr-16 13:55:41

Sparkling - ooh you are drilling down now! I guess I am questioning what is more important.

Culture or Law.

The curry house owner would be aware of H&S law and food regs, he would have agreed to abide by the strict regs when he got his licence to trade. He felt his own culture was more important.

" I guess I am questioning what is more important.

Culture or Law."

Then why not ask that directly, rather than posing such a daft AIBU question?

YABU to expect him to use "toilet tissue". Half the world doesn't. YANBU to expect him to be clean and hygienic around food.

ghostyslovesheep Fri 15-Apr-16 14:00:35

OP I do not understand this post - do you HONESTLY expect anyone to say it's okay to wipe your bum with your hand and serve food? hmm

The man was persecuted and banned which also shows you how it's viewed legally

so I am not sure why you are so ranty or upset - is this local to you - did you shop there?

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone Fri 15-Apr-16 14:00:36

I know some people and cultures believe toilet paper is dirty and prefer to wash by hand and water. I have no problem with that AS LONG AS they was their hands well with soap and hot water afterwards. I also expect people who use toilet paper to wash their hands with soap and hot water afterwards fwiw

ghostyslovesheep Fri 15-Apr-16 14:01:43

'culture or law' - well the answer is in the FACT he was prosecuted and banned - so LAW obviously hmm

Sparklingbrook Fri 15-Apr-16 14:56:52

'drilling down' confused

stopandstandup123 Fri 15-Apr-16 15:03:22

As this was said to be "cultural" there may be many more take away or food workers who follow this practice. I was not aware of this way of wiping your bum until I read the article. I am feeling a bit queasy now as a take away has always been a treat for us.

We are educated about e-coli, salmonella, listeria and know it can kill people with compromised immune systems by ingestion. We know these germs lurk in poo.

Toilet tissue is in all uk toilets (bar really grotty ones that I would avoid) as are signs saying "now wash your hands". I have not seen a sign yet that says wipe your ar*e with your hand and go to the kitchen to pour water from a bottle over the poo hand.

So am I really being that unreasonable to hope that all food operators use toilet tissue and wash their hand before re-entering the food prep area?
