I was just speaking to a childhood friend of mine and she has been told she has an 80% chance of having bone cancer.

I'm so scared for her. She is my oldest friend, we've known each other since we were 5 years old, went through all of our schools together but since growing up now live in different counties. I'm so far away now but I desperately want to be there to support her. She's one of the only true RL friends I have and I don't want to lose her.

But I feel slightly guilty for feeling upset when it isn't about me at all. Aibu?

Don't feel guilty, a friend of mine was diagnosed with lukeimia (sp), I hadn't seen her for many years but it was still painful for me. She is in remission now, and has been through so much including bone marrow transplants. I admire her so much for the way she has dealt with everything that's been thrown at her.

YANBU - you can still support her however it turns out (she has a 20% chance of not having it, don't forget that). If it turns out to be cancer you could be on the other side of the world and still support her (I was dx with ovarian cancer when my best friend was in Asia for a year). Be there if she needs you, send her letters, texts, visit when you can.

I know you won't, but don't mention the fear of losing her. A close friend of mines first words were "are you going to die" and while now I can see she just cared, at the time it Really scared me and was something I was trying not to entertain.

So, YANBU, chin up and I hope it's good news.

Thank you Little, I am trying to cling to that 20% and hope for the best but I think she is just trying to be realistic about the chances of it not being.

I wouldn't mention to her about being afraid to lose her, don't want to freak her out more than she already is.
