AIBU?

To think that the car you buy is a statement of the 'tribe' you belong to.

DH wants to buy a Discovery Sport 7 seater so we can fit 3 DCs plus others.

We live in a relatively affluent area. Discovery Sports around here are driven by perfectly pleasant women, but women who tend not to work, to spend a lot of time and energy on appearance, and who definitely don't ever drive off road.

I come from a working class family. We currently are not affluent. I have worked since I could. I like working. I like to look nice, but for me style is less important than substance.

I do NOT want to drive a Discovery Sport. We have talked about this. He has just bought a friend who works for LR home with one for us to test drive. I work in marketing. I understand very clearly why people chose the brands they chose.

AIBU to insist that we do not buy the Discovery Sport on brand/looks/target market grounds only and the fact it has a fucking tiny rear window which might be why they're always parked over two bays round these parts

This is probably a ridiculous thing to say to someone who works in marketing, but you care too much what people think Grin

Test drive it. If you like it, buy it. If you don't, then don't. A tiny rear window is a valid reason not to buy a car. Being judgy about the other people you think drive the car is not.

I understand very clearly why people chose the brands they chose.

I don't work in marketing and I can tel you why people chose what they buy.
It's the one they want and can afford, any other reason is bollocks.

Now just like that, you go buy what car you want and can afford.

I can't speak for anyone else but I got my current car because it was big enough for 2 teens and a 7 year old and all out camping gear - and it's a 4x4 so no getting stuck in tent fields

got feck all idea what it says about me or what my tribe is!

Just buy a car which suits your needs and which you like driving. If you don't need a 4x4 get something like a people carrier if you prefer.

IMO discoveries are far too big for our roads and our car parks.
They are unecesserily big on the outside for the space you get inside. Don't do it.

What car do you want then OP?

Ive never been bothered about car brands apart from a perception of reliability (so no french cars).

Last car I bought I wanted a diesel estate. So then it was drawing up a shortlist of what second hand cars were available which were in my price bracket, not more than 3 years old and not over 25k mileage.

Deliberately bought a Q7 so I wasn't one of those women, so I'm totally with you.

What tribe is a ford estate driver in?

I drive a brand new BMW 2 Series. DH drives a 15 year old Astra. Sometimes we drive each other's car.

Confused

My Dh is in a different tribe to me then.

He drives a swanky Audi, I drive beaten up old banger through choice. I do not want the responsibility of driving a shiny new expensive car.

Now see I would lump a Q7 and a landrover discovery sport together. Grin

Cars quite simply get you from A to B in my world.

I'm more concerned that your DH bought a friend.

Where did he buy him from and what do you think his purchase says about him?

Ok, you don't want to belong to the "Discovery tribe".Fair enough. Which tribe do you want to belong to then?
Incidentally, the "Discovery tribe" round these parts is completely different to the one you describe!

I do think that people buy Discoverys mostly for show. In most parts of the UK you just don't need an enormous 4x4, and as a poster above said, they are like an anti tardis inside. My friend has one and I just couldn't believe how small it felt sitting in it.

You are far better getting a people carrier type.car, but they are not really as sexy are they?

"I have a vw tiguan. My husband has a volvo v50"

No idea about the Tiguan.

But your DH is probably an accountant, an environmental health officer or works for HSE (or IKEA).

Although I never drive off road, don't work and spend half my life in the gym, so in your eyes, I probably am one of those women.

DH drives a Maserati. Can you tell me what tribe he is so I can take the piss?

Don't buy it because you don't want it, buy what you want.

Intrigued by tribes. I have owned many car brands over time.

We bought (grudgingly) a Citroen c4 grand Picasso. It's surprisingly lovely to drive & feels more luxurious than it is. 3 kids & us fit in it with ease. Not sure what we need? Just chuck everything in the back!!! Let's take the dog too & all of her stuff.... Grin. AND I find it easier to park than I do my teeny little fiesta!!
