To wonder how my credit card got cloned?

Text this morning from my credit card provider to ask if I had spent £40 in a fast food place in California yesterday! Since I have been in Somerset all weekend and haven't been to California since 2007 it was obviously fraud and the card has been cancelled, no harm done. Provider says the magnetic strip was probably cloned. But I am bamboozled as to how this happened. I never use this card for payment in restaurants or anywhere that a salesperson would take it from me. It's only used for two things- swiping at London Underground turnstiles and online purchases from Amazon (I don't use it on any other websites). It never leaves my custody. I last used it on Amazon about 5 days ago.

Can anyone who knows about such things shed any light?

Some people have scanners in their bags and can pick info up by close proximity, i.e. stood behind you in a queue, say in a cafe etc and then they sell the info on to whatever dickhead will but it.

It happened to my friend after we'd been to a convention, she rang me to get me to check all my cards. The person had spent up to get limit with a fake version of Hastings direct.

Either that or through a tampered atm.

Crafty b*ards Angry - glad yours is sorted
