AIBU?

To think that whoever is in charge of maternity stock at Boots has never been near a set of postnatal nether regions?

I'm due DC3 any time now and suddenly realised I have none of the essential postnatal stuff - I've been a bit too casual about it all this time round!

I went to our local Boots which is massive - two huge floors with several aisles of baby clothes, a huge gifts section, big electrical goods selection - pretty much everything you could possibly need and a whole load of stuff you don't.

I could not find any maternity pads anywhere. There were about 10 different varieties of breast pad, a dozen different breast milk storage options, a whole aisle of postnatal bubble baths and pamper kits, but no maternity pads. When I asked, the assistant looked a bit embarrassed and pointed me to the bottom shelf of the pamper kit section, where tucked away in the corner there was one tiny (very pretty floral print) packet of ultra-thin maternity pads.

This is all they now stock.

Apparently they've 'reduced their selection.'' The assistant wasn't quite sure why, as apparently I am not the first heavily pregnant woman to come in, glare at the flowery packaging and point out that a pack of 10 ultra-thin maternity pads are going to be about as much use as a chocolate teapot immediately after giving birth.

Is this a bad product decision or is it just me? Does everyone else breeze about postnatally, bedecked in flowery pads the size of a postage-stamp?

When I had the other 2 DCs I had some lovely Boots maternity pads that felt like sitting on giant down-filled cushions. I want the massive pads! Surely this is not too much to ask when I'm about to expel a whole human being from my nether regions?

And any recommendations for alternatives?

Superdrug do the ones you mean. 99p for 10, I think

Kotex night were my saviour. Very soft and big. Not at all scratchy. You can get them in super drug and home bargains.

Wilkinsons have some fairly cheap ones.

I stole a lot from the hospital and then just used ordinary thick night time towels.

The boots near me has all the baby stuff on the first floor - and the world's slowest, smallest lift. It takes 20 mins to get up there to buy your nappies and then the same to get back down, grrrrr!

I did consider Superdrug, but it's at the other end of town and up a very small hill, and if I'd traipsed up there and been greeted by another teeny-tiny flowery package there might have been unfortunate consequences.

Although if I went into spontaneous labour in the middle of Boots/Superdrug through sheer rage, the resulting mess might cause a rethink of their maternity stock...

Thank you for the recommendations.

After three kids, I've tried all the maternity pads going, and Boots cheapos were by far and away the best. I can't believe they've stopped stocking them. Everyone I know recommended them to other mums.

I've been buying a packet at a time whenever I see them so some tesco some morrisons some boots. Last time dh had to keep buying more I could easily go through a pack a day for the first 2 weeks so makes sense to stock up!

Tesco do the big cushiony ones, just bought several packs myself and used them last time round too, only about a £1 a pack of 12 I iirc Easter Smile

I ordered mine online. I think they were Mothercare ones with wings and they were great - I did try the Always normal nighttime towels but they were scented and gave me raging thrush, which with a healing episiotomy was utter torture. I've just checked the Mothercare website though and the ones I liked seem to be out of stock. Confused

That's strange, our local boots do the old thick style pads as well as the thinner ones.

Tesco. They are exactly like sitting on pillows!

That sounds not great.

Do you have a tesco near as they do the decent ones

GozerTheGozerian · 26/03/2016 11:08

They still do them I think ? Their website has the thick and thinner versions.

The Tescos ones seem to be ahead on the recommendations. We don't have a big Tescos anywhere round here so I'll have to see if the little local ones stock them. I like the sound of sitting on pillows Grin

I might make DP go out on a maternity pad hunt - with DS2 he came back with the biggest selection you've ever seen as he didn't want to ask for help!

I used the mothercare ones and found them really good.

Ahhhh those fecking flowery pads! They were all my dh could get when I sent him on a mission for me, needless to say he was sent bac again pretty quickly.
I found boots breast lads very scratchy and 'synthetic ' feeling too, really uncomfortable, don't be tempted by the lower price on them!

My local boots stock them and you can order them online. I am annoyed at shops that put maternity products on the bottom shelf. Bending down is not easy when heavily pregnant. I am looking at you M and S and your maternity bras which come in smaller sizes than your regular bras.

Bit of a faff, but if you really want the Boots ones, could you order online and then collect from the store?

I'm not sure if that's the same ones I had last time or not. But at least they do still do something other than the ultra thin ones! The assistant made it sound like they'd stopped making them altogether.

Maybe I could actually sit on a pillow, rather than just looking for a pad that simulates the effect of a pillow.

A big, fat, downy one shoved down my pants. That would work, right?

Sainsburys were the most padded ones I found, like sitting on a cushion!

The tesco ones I found great and I used their disposable knickers too for the first couple of days so if there were any leaks I could just bin the lot!
