To ask when (or if) your baby slept through the night

... and what you class as 'through the night'. Just trying to work out what is 'normal'.

Out of my NCT group I apparently have the only baby that does not sleep 7-7 or thereabouts.

My baby is 9 months and on a good night will wake at 10 or 11 for a feed and then again at 5ish, waking for the day at 6.30/7. He's breastfed (not sure if this makes a difference).

DD1 started sleeping through at about 10 weeks. That stopped at about 9 months and didn't start regularly again until about 3.

DD2 has been sleeping through more often than not for the past few weeks. She's almost 8

what you are saying is the norm in my eyes. Babies wake for feeds approx every 4-5 hours.

My DD is nearly 10 months and sounds roughly the same to your DS. We co-sleep mostly so it's difficult to tell when she wakes exactly, I don't always check the time.

She probably wakes once more than your baby I think.

My twins started at nearly 3 months. They have last feed at 7 and go to sleep about 8.30 and we have our first feed at 7 am!

DC1 was 13 weeks, DC2 was 11 weeks. I don't know of anyone else's who was quite this early. Mine were formula fed. BF babies do take longer I believe. 9 months seems a bit old to need night feeds given they are on solids and should be having a decent amount of food during the day.

Oh God i want to know!!! My dd still wakes up at least 3 times! She's nearly one!

Dd1 is 5 and still doesn't sleep through. Get a nighttime visitor around 3am without fail. She manages to sneak into bed without waking me now.

Dd2 is 10 weeks and is sleeping through 80% of the time. Pretty sure I haven't done anything differently!

DD1 at about 13 months (when she gave up her dummy) and DD2 is 11 months and nowhere near sleeping through!! DD1 has never slept 7-7 though. More like 8-7am. She's 4 now and still roughly the same.

My dd slept through from 6-8 weeks. Sleeping through is an 8 hour stretch imo.

DD slept through doing a 7-7 from 6-8 weeks but barely slept in the day!

She also whinged constantly which is probaly why she slept through as she had tired herself out whinging all day!

I would say 9 months old is very late to be not sleeping through but breastfeeding makes a massive difference! Breastfed babies do tend to fuss alot more and wake alot in the night.

DS slept through (as in 5hrs+ in one stretch) a grand total of 5 times before he was 2yo.
DD was sleeping through (7hrs+) with the first 2 weeks.
Both breastfed - the only difference was DS was tiny (prem and 9lbs) and naturally went for longer between feeds at night.

itsmeagain1 · 20/03/2016 21:37

DD - can't remember, maybe 10 months? I would consider sleeping the night to be maybe an unbroken stint from about 10pm-5 or 6am.
DS - oh about 5 years before he didn't wake at least once every night between 8pm-6am. The best he could do before that was maybe 5 hours straight 11pm-4am (he would then be up for the day). He was still waking and coming into our bed quite regularly up until maybe 18 months ago (he is 7.5).
Every child is different. It's extremely unlikely that every child in your group sleeps 12 hours a night - that's bollocks. Either they are lying or they don't count a quick feed/ nappy change at least once a night.

DS1 slept 7-7 from about 12 weeks.

DS2 occasionally sleeps 7-5 but not often and usually wakes around once sometimes twice a night. He's 16 months. He doesn't wake because he's hungry he's just a really light sleeper and the sound of us walking past his room or the heating going on is enough to disturb him.

That sounds normal. By a year DS had dropped the 10/11 feed and by 15/16 months had dropped the 5 am feed. Although that only happened when we switched to the bottle (and cow's milk) and I noticed he was having less than an ounce. So he was only waking at 5 am out of habit. But overall your child sounds normal, esp for a breastfed kid. I can say, as the mother of a 4 year old, that the 7-7 sleeping at 10 months means nothing long term. What you want is a child who by the time they are 2ish is sleeping independently, putting themselves to sleep and not constantly coming into your bed (if you are fine with those things that's okay too). My son fed every 2 hours till 5/6 months and then followed the above pattern. I felt like a bit of a failure at first but with the v gentlest of sleep training (never left to cry) we got to a point where by 2 we tucked him into bed and he wakes up at 7 am. Several of the 7-7 at 5 months babies are not hugely fussy sleepers, waking at 5 am etc. So with sleep I think it's best to have your eyes on the long term prize as well.

My son is nearly 2 and still doesn't sleep through reliably every night. It sucks. I'm 99% sure we'd have a second baby by now if our first had been a good sleeper, but DS seems to have put DH off for life, despite being amazing in every other way Sad

Mine have never slept 7 til 7. They are 4 and 1! Took a loooong time to sleep through too. 1 year old has only done it once

14mo and has never fucking slept through... not even close!!

Report
Mummamayhem · 20/03/2016 21:41

DD (breastfed) slept through reliably 11-13 hours a night from 10 months.

DS (bottlefed) only started sleeping more than 3 hour stretches at 18 months. (Woke hourly for ages and did a lot of co-sleeping) hes sleeping through now at 2 in his own bed for 10-12 hrs.

Neither left to cry or 'trained'.

None of my 3DC slept through before at least a year - DC1 was the earliest, around 14 months. I couldn't bear to think about it with the others!
DC4 still wakes a lot in the night, even with co-sleeping. He's 6 months old. DC3 generally winds up in our bed most nights too - he's nearly 4.
Sometimes I could weep with the sheer tiredness.

Over two and still not there, probably due to new sibling though.

Bear in mind the 7-7 baby at eight months might start waking up later on - I got told everyone else and their bloody uncle's baby 'slept through at six weeks' when mine woke every forty minutes. Those same children are waking now, so things do change or their parents lied through their teeth, a common affliction amongst parents competing about the best sleeper

BertieBotts · 20/03/2016 21:41

Er DS was about 2.5! Sorry! Grin

That was 7-7, though. His sleep was definitely manageable younger.

I remember that he would sleep about 7 hours when he was 7 weeks old but then that broke with the 4 month sleep regression. However I co slept and he could latch himself on at that point, so I didn't really notice much and it wasn't until he was 8mo and crawling that I started putting him to bed alone in the early evenings anyway. I'd put him down at 7 or 8ish and he'd wake once before I went to bed at 11 and then a few times in the night (which, again, I wasn't really aware of).

I do remember by about 2 years he was going for the whole evening, waking about when I'd go to bed and then waking early in the morning at which point he'd run into me and climb into bed with me for a couple more hours until morning. That was a nice routine.

7.30-6.30 consistently from 11 months with no warning. Before that the odd sleep through from 3 months but mostly endless broken nights.

DD is nearly 4.... I'm still waiting....

That said I'm a light sleeper, am awake several times a night. I suspect dd is a bit like her mummy.

From 13 weeks DS slept 7-7 with a dream feed at 10:30pm, dropped the dream feed at 6 months and he still slept 7pm- 7/8am.

But he was formula fed, I think it's normal for breastfed babies to take longer.

After 6 months the food should replace the need for night time milk though, so may be waking more from habit than hunger.

Report
LittleGreyBear · 20/03/2016 21:44

DS 1 - 10 months
DS 2 - 15 months

Both breastfed.

(For me sleeping through the night is putting them to bed 7pm and they wake 6am or later with no dream feed.)

Don't despair, your baby is totally normal!
