AIBU?

To hate how everything has to be an experience

And not just an experience or an event but one at the outer reaches of emotion. Nothing is every just alright or fine, or a good day out.

Bob and I had the most amazingly uplifting experience of our lives today when we took the kids to the park. Such an incredibly proud moment getting to see these precious people grow

Is it the social media angle that has done this?

We went to the park the kids ran about a bit. Bob and I sat there freezing our arses off watching them. Anyone want to babysit while we go to the pub later?

Doesn't have quite the inspirational, mindful, glowing feel from it really.

I'm sure Bob feels blessed that he got to spend quality time helping his children appreciate the beautiful world that we all take for granted so much.

YANBU.

If friends talk about "amazing experiences" and I feel they are being too ott I tend to waggle my eyebrows or fall into the monty python "say no more" sketch. It tends to sort out their flights of grandeur Grin

Bob must live in an affluent area if he's got seats to sit on Zucker!

Ours are always beeing burnt to ashes by hoodlums Grin

I agree it's the social media influence - it's what people want you to think about their 'experiences' rather than what they actually think. It's all veneer and the incessant reporting of it masks reality and stops the actual engagement with life. I'd be more tempted to engage with Facebook and its equivalents and be less of a Luddite if people were more honest. And didn't think everyone was interested in the tedious minutae of other people's lives. Or their picture of dinner. Or their random thoughts on current politics (from people you know don't have a political bone in their body). And where your teacher/lawyer/childminder/local police officer doesn't think a pouty, vaguely sexualised selfie as their cover photo is perfectly acceptable. Just weird.

God I sound like a grumpy bastard. No veneer here.

'Beautiful family day out with my hubby and our amazing kids. Makes it all worthwhile. Proud mumma. #feelingblessed.'

Translation: 'We peeled the kids away from their iPads and dragged them to the park. Someone trod in dogshit and we lost the car keys in the sandpit. Now we're going home to argue about sex.'

Koala - made me laugh. If people wrote that sort of thing I'd bloody sign up.

It's not as bad as 'journey'.

Everything seems to be a bloody journey now.

I've noticed this during my journey on Mumsnet.

I hate 'making memories' I'm sick a little in my mouth every time I read that.

YANBU. Am fed up with reading statuses that read like gushy, sententious Oscar winners' speeches. YY to use of "journey". Another one is "humbled".

As a journalist (Camilla Long in the Sunday Times, possibly) wrote, everything nowadays has to be an "emotional wank". It's in the same vein as everything having to be a "thing". having a drink has become "rehydration"; given a baby a few items that feel interesting is now called a "sensory box" and don't start me on "baby led weaning".

We really need to stop taking ourselves so seriously and showing off.

I'm such a grumpy old git. Grin

After an exhilarating journey my hubby and I would love to share the truly amazing news we have arrived at our destination and look forward to the new and exciting experiences ahead of us

It took two of us to get the kids strapped into their car seats from which they screamed their heads off the whole way to the supermarket. We got banned from waitrose last week and now have to suffer tesco with the riff raff

Ha ha this is soooo true and drives me nuts.

I have a Whatsapp group with a friend who is on brink of divorce, her life sucks, we all support her but when she tposts on Facebook 'So blessed with my wonderful kids and partner hashtag love/family/good times' blah blah I feel like saying 'shove our support up your lying arse'.

Hate how the word stunning is always thrown about on social media. Picture of someone's marmite toast encrusted child - stunning. Not.

Worra yy to that! I blame Tony bloody Blair for starting it. He was always twaddling on about being on a journey. I hate hearing about any journey that doesn't involve planes, trains or automobiles... Grin

Haa ha oh yes, wish I was brave enough to 'translate' these fb posts in the comments but I wouldn't have any friends left as everybody else is on an awesome journey and we just went to the park.

We have benches too, posh, see.

We went to the park today. I sat down because I was tired. It was freezing cold. The child wouldn't keep her boots or coat on. We came home.

That's more like it.
