AIBU?

Jilted John, Savile and lyrics

Last night a friend came round and we were talking and she referred to someone as a moron. I winced and said that is not a word I want to hear and it isn't a word I would use personally.

Despite me being po-faced I remembered this song. I think I remember it as supposedly a funny song but I was very young and it played on TOTP, R1 etc. I knew all the words :(.

So, looked it up on Youtube and there it is, introduced by Savile.

I really don't like it.

AIBU to think that lyrics haven't moved forward too much?

Ooh, lovely, and you thought you'd share it with us.

Thanks.

I think YABU to think that lyrics haven't come on in some ways, Killing An Arab by the Cure probably wouldn't go down very well now, but then there are some rap (?) songs that are pretty shit in the lyric department against women.

That's what I was trying to say, obviously badly.

Turning Japanese is another classic from that era. No idea why Savile makes it into your thread title.

You should look up GG Allin on youtube,I'm sure that'd be right up your street. :)

Thanks for the link though - hilarious to see the young John Shuttleworth, and the link below to that time tested hit 'Ullo John Got a New Motor' by Alexei Sayle :)

ffs why do people want to judge the past by what we know now?
back then JS had not been outed
yet you have trawled for the link and shared it/

As above, the word was used last night and I remembered. I have not trawled for the link.

Is your issue with the word moron or with the presence of JS?

I remember singing the song as a kid, admiring Savile and that was it.

Last night, remembering and watching the link , it made me feel very uncomfortable and wanted to discuss how much times, and me, have changed.

But it was back in the days - I was just so surprised by the lyrics even though I could sing them without thinking.

Savile was just a nasty surprise.

I remember that song! My friend's mum used to sing it because her husband's name was Gordon and I don't think she liked him much.

What's wrong with 'moron'? There are more provocative words in the song. She's a slut, slag etc he's a pouffe, which are more offensive nowadays.

I know, that's why I said I was surprised by the lyrics I could sing without thinking. Moron was the word which stood out for me.

You can hardly not judge a clip of savile knowing what we know now Samcro. That wanker footballer who was found guilty of grooming a 15 year old last week reminded me of savile et al and how what they did must have played out, with the pay off for a youngster meeting a celeb being seen as a price worth paying.

Saville was a Top of the Pops presenter, does that mean everyone who performed on the show was tainted? Get a fucking grip.
