I'm so scared...might be pregnant.

I don't even know why I'm posting this. I'm 43...43! DH and I have two DDs and we weren't planning on more. I don't even know if I AM but listen to what's been going on.

My last period finished on valentines day. We've been having sex using the withdrawl method for the past 8 years without incident...8 years! We're experts at it because I react badly to the contraceptive pill and have a latex allergy. I know there are latex free condoms but we were always very careful indeed.

Well...over the past...maybe 8 days or so I've been feeling the urge to wee a lot. Never even crossed my mind that it might be a pregnancy symptom...I thought maybe it's a UTI or my age!

Then yesterday out shopping I felt very nauseous all of a sudden...not like me at all...then in the evening yesterday I had terrible indegestion...I was actually burping which just isn't me...except when I'm pregnant.

I STILL didn't think anything. Tonight though I was marching off for my millionth wee and DH said "Are you going to the loo again?" and I said yes...I keep going...and then my head went OMG!

I need to get a test. I'm absolutely terrified.

I'm 43.

I have two kids! DH said not to worry until I know for sure...the other thing worth mentioning is this.

I was a smoker...gave up when pregnant...but 8 years ago, after I had DD2 I went through a very stressful time at work and started again.

I finally gave up 2 months ago. It could have affected my fertility couldn't it? And now...bang.

I've got too many symptoms to ignore. I can't remember the sex...DH and I have quite regular sex so I can't even pinpoint the time after Valentines day when we did it. Am I being silly? Panicking over nothing? Help me with the dates because I'm bad at maths and it's night here and I can't get a test.

You need to do a test. Once you do you can move forward either way. Until then you are going to worry yourself silly.

Do you want to be pregnant, deep down? I only ask because you haven't said you don't.

Well I'd say you need to do a test. Withdrawal method notoriously unreliable. If correctly used failure rate is quoted as 4% a year.

God AND I didn't mean to post here!! Sorry! I meant this for chat.

Ali I feel too old...I'm fit but 43 nonetheless and it feels risky but I don't think I could do anything about it either.

Do a test. Only way to know.

Ok. Assuming a 28 day cycle, your next period will be due on Sunday right? You could take a test now but in my experience you may not get a positive result (if you are pregnant) till the day you are due, or the day after.
If you aren't pregnant, take it as a wake up call to sort your contraception!! The withdrawal method is notoriously unreliable and you have just been lucky to date.
If you are, you have plenty of time to decide what you want to do next. Bit late for the morning after pill mind you.
Deep breaths, get a pregnancy test, and come back to let us know how you get on Thanks

How old are your dd?
I had an unplanned pregnancy at 40 and it was honestly the best mistake I ever made.

Yes re contraception how about an iud, vasectomy or female sterilisation?

MattDillonsPants · 10/03/2016 13:38

Is it too soon for all those symptoms to be showing anyway? Even if I'd got pregnant on the 15th then that's only...what..not even 4 weeks ago and it could be even less!

Yes, test.

Good luck, either way.

If you're pregnant, you're very early. Dating it from the end of your last period gives me only 24 days. Can women have symptoms that early?

You need to test to put your mind at rest.

I'd hold out until a period does/n't show up to test, appreciate that might feel like ages away. But I had symptoms and tested a couple of days before my period was due, negative. A week later, still having symptoms and period missed I did another test, baby 9 months old today.

Ali I don't think I can wait. I'll get a test tomorrow and if it's negative I'll wait for period and if no period...well....

I'd get an early pregnancy test!

Your period finished Valentines day, so let's say you're on for 5 days, which means you would have started on about 9 Feb, making you due back on your period on 9th March, so so technically you're only a day late.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/03/2016 13:43

All that of course is based on a 28 day cycle

If you are a fit 43, I don't think your age is going to be a problem.
How would you feel if you are pregnant?

You're not quite due on yet op, maybe you've got a water infection.

Best of luck with the test though. There are worse things than being pregnant at 43.

I doubt giving up smoking would have boosted your fertility, however I did get pregnant with my third DC after I gave up crisps for lent, previously 2 pregnancies were through fertility treatment and was told could never conceive naturally.

Seems very early to be getting so many symptoms? Your period isn't even late yet?

Did you have early symptom with your other pregnancies?

Report
Charley50 · 10/03/2016 13:48

You don't have to continue with the pregnancy if you are...but on the other hand; 43 isn't that old anymore... DP and I use the withdrawal method too blush.
