I have just started in a new job. All is going well, but it is super fast paced, lots to do and a lot of stuff that requires me to think deeply.

Across from me there is a bank of desks with four people, and a fifth regularly joins them for extremely loud gossip sessions. Think squealing, loud conversation and playing videos for each other on their phones.

AIBU to want to find out who the line manager is, and drop her a quick note asking her to keep it down? Or am I a big misery who needs to accept this new culture?

You're new. Maybe give it a few months before you make everyone hate you.

...sorry OP, not a helpful post from me. But I do agree with Oyster. Athough I understand it must be difficult for you to concentrate. Can you put some headphones in when they are being loud?

Before you go running to their manager perhaps try asking nicely when they next do it if it would be possible to chat elsewhere or be quiet as you're in the middle of something urgent you need to concentrate on?

I would leave it while to get urself settled in....and then have quiet word with whoever the right person is that can say "come on guys, keep it down" without it looking like its come from anyone in particular.
Good luck

can you listen to music via headphones? I find quiet classical music helpful in this kind of situation.
