"I'd like to drop my trousers to the queen" rather than pick litter for her.

www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-3472277/Shame-liberals-rubbish-efforts-clean-Britain-Queen-TOBY-YOUNG.html

I am afraid I am one of those terrible 'liberals' who are unimpressed with calls to 'Clean for the Queen' - I would like to see cleaner streets and parks and I always pick up my litter - I would call for better funded local services to provide cleaning crews and better maintenance of streets and parks. I always encourage my children to use the bins provided on the street - but the bins are infrequently emptied and the Councils are too cash strapped to ensure that parks/ roads are kept well maintained and safe. I carry rubbish home if there is no available bins and I think it is depressing how easily people drop their litter without a second thought. Maybe the Queen can provide more dog poo bins.

The Queen has f all to do with a better local environment. She is the person that must think the world smells like fresh paint, she has nothing to do with my life and I don't find an over privileged stately home squatter very inspiring - how much litter picking does she do? How would she have any understanding of the disenfranchised and disengaged in society who live shitty lives and are surrounded by ugly unsafe infrastructure, dog poo lined streets and the general impression that no one gives a shit about them.

Clean for our neighborhoods? Don't drop your litter? - use our council tax to provide better street cleaning services? - yes. Clean for the Queen? - no thanks.

I'd not drop my trousers but agree with you on the rest. There was a thread on schoolchildren doing this a few days ago.

The words TOBY YOUNG in that link are enough for to me to be fully confident the article will be a load of all rage inducing horse shit but.....Clean for the Queen? Fuck that shit! I'm no forelock tugging serf.

Isn't "I'd like to drop my trousers to the Queen" a Smiths reference? Totally agree OP.

Those pictures of Gove's ugly mug and a litter picker make me want to fly tip.

What's wrong with Keep Britain Tidy? I agree OP. Littering gives me the rage but to think the Queen is that popular we'll clean the streets for her is misguided.

Sounds like a slogan from the 1950's!

Can you imagine Toby Young's reaction to an anti litter campaign called 'Put It In The Bin For Corbyn'.

I'm with you OP

Getting people to think about rubbish/clean up their local environment is a laudable aim, but "Clean for the Queen" is a)basically going to give loads of people a sense of smug self satisfaction because they did something on one fucking day when the rest of the time they couldn't give a shit, and walk past piles of rubbish.
and b) we are paying ever more tax, which often ends up as profits for some useless company ( who then use creative accounting to get out of paying their tax! ) ......why the frickin hell should already hard working people be doing the job that councils should be doing??

I have actually started taking a bin liner out on dog walks with me, because the rubbish round here is horrific, but I would much rather the council did their job.

I can't stand the royal family, I honestly believe that we should kick them out of all their expensive estates, and turn them into social housing/care homes for the elderly, using the money saved from all the taxpayers money either directly or indirectly given to them.

I would like to clean for the Queen. But that's just the start: I would also like to polish all her silver, mow all her lawns and wash all her corgis. There's nothing I wouldn't do for her Royal Majesty, God bless her!

I'm in line to drop trousers for the Queen! I'd like to see her pick up litter alongside the common folk.

Most misguided ad campaign EVER. No idea how it got this far without someone in their agency/at Keep Britain Tidy questioning it. The violent rejection of it has nothing to do with being liberal. We just don't want to be serfs. We'll clean for our neighbours, for our children, for our community. For the queen? Fuck off.

I can't understand how the Clean For The Queen got through all the well-paid professional PR people and advisors that abound in government. Are we supposed to believe that NOBODY said "Erm, guys...?". Evidently "pet projects" can be forced through no matter what.

Also, his article is nonsense. Keep Britain Tidy have always done an annual 'clean' at this time of year. It used to be called The Big Tidy Up. Communities, retailers and organisations have always got involved. It's nothing new, they aren't responding to a call from the Queen in the way that us lesser mortals aren't. They're just doing the same thing they've done every year under a different, crappy campaign headline.

I know a couple of people that have always joined in but feel slightly uncomfortable doing it this year, 'for the queen'.

That's true Cauli - my children's school have taken part in the 'big tidy up' before - I also found that a bit patronising but well meaning - this years campaign on the other hand makes me feel ill.

Yes yes yes to everything that's already been said. I hate litter but I also hate this serfdom.

I would add that things like this are always aimed at women and children. Like the Big Society - clearly just a rose-tinted view of the good old days when women didn't expect payment for keeping things going. I imagine schools, brownie packs, cub packs and WI groups are all cleaning for the queen, while all the men do bugger all.

Speaks volumes about their world view, though, doesn't it ?

The Queen has fuck all to do with the is campaign, in the sense that it is nothing to do with the palace.

Perhaps you could volunteer to organise an event during one of the many other campaigns that Keep Brtiain Tidy organise? Or did you do so at their last one in November? They run them every few months.

Report
CauliflowerBalti · 07/03/2016 12:14

Um... The Queen would have to have approved the use of her name in the campaign. So it kind of is something to do with her.

Yup.

Tis a load of misjudged bollocks and a cynical attempt to get the plebs cheerfully doing the job of paid employees.

And yup again.
