Am I being unreasonable not to wear a bra?

Nomorebras · 06/03/2016 21:17

Reasons being that:

  1. I find them uncomfortable
  2. They make my boobs look weird
  3. I don't think I need one.

Why do we see them as such a vital piece of clothing?

If they make your boobs look weird you're probably wearing the wrong size

But yanbu. If you don't want to wear one don't

If they're making your boobs look weird, and they're uncomfortable, you're probably wearing the wrong size and or style tbh.

If you don't want to wear a bra, then don't. No way I could live without a bra though.

Probably but I always used to find them uncomfortable!

Pain, mine are fine 6 years and bra-less :)

Please yourself. In what way could you possibly be unreasonable? Confused

Yanbu to feel that way, I always love being bra free and if I could always be then I would, my boobs are so small and have been stretched so maintenance isn't required to keep them pert as that ship sailed a while ago so don't really get what the point in a bra is for me..

Maybe look into buying comfortable sports bras , I got one from Bluebooby which are very comfortable and highly rated but I'd reccomend getting a size up if from there.

I don't know Shatners - I suppose I don't understand why anyone would wear one!

YANBU. I go braless whenever I can get away with it. Wearing a bra does make me feel a bit more "ready to face the world" but if I'm just going to the supermarket I layer up and go without.

This study suggests bras have more cons than pros anyway.

"The findings suggested that wearing a bra from an early age did nothing to help support the chest, reduce back pain or prevent breast sagging. “Medically, physiologically, anatomically – breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity. On the contrary, they get saggier with a bra,” Professor Rouillon told France Info in an interview."

What bra size do you wear?

If you've got quite small boobs, it's not that unusual not to wear a bra, I don't think.

If they're quite big, you probably need to get measured again and get a well fitting bra. It shouldn't be uncomfortable or make your boobs look weird.

It's absolutely your choice if you wear one - If I didn't, I think the weight would make me uncomfortable after a while and I'd feel underdressed. I also dread to think of the attention that it would attract. And I'd probably worry that they'd sag, especially when I run etc. Your decision, though. If you're happier without (and have been for six years), stay without. If you're feeling unsure, try a soft, well-fitting bra and see how you go, but remember to give yourself a bit of time to get used to wearing one so it's a fair comparison!

I don't wear socks (apart from when I sprint walk the dogs) which sort of follows the same logic. I hate them, can't even explain why - I just don't like that extra layer on my feet.

I don't give a shit what people say, or think about it I'm sure they themselves don't give a shit either

YANBU

Totally depends on your boobs IMO. If you have huge knockers then friends tell me it is uncomfortable without a bra. You also see woman who are wearing incorrect bras and have really weird boobs sagging down. The correct bra can really help the shape of clothes and how they look.

However each to their own but if you don't want to then don't!!

I don't always wear one. I rather like giving my boobs a day off. But I am a 34 B so unless I'm running it's not essential.

I know what you mean Dozy! I wear socks but bras - no!

I was 34C last time I was measured.

My boobs hurt if I don't wear a bra, they're too heavy! Most people needs bras. Even when mine were a small C cup I needed one. But YANBU to let them swing free if you don't need one!

If I'm not at work, I wear stretchy crop top things instead of a bra. They don't give me the greatest shape but are very very comfortable in a way even my best fitting bras are not. YANBU. Wear or don't wear whatever you like.

That's not big, but probably too big to be going braless. I think you probably are wearing the wrong bra size. My bras are really comfortable and very very flattering, which has only been after I got properly fitted.

I don't understand. You've not been wearing a bra for 6 years. You are happy with this. No-one else has commented on this.

Why have you posted in AIBU?

No way could I do a Zumba class with no bra and 36GG breasts! I wouldn't want to knock anyone out or end up with my boobs down to my knees

"I suppose I don't understand why anyone would wear one!"

Loads of reasons:

  1. Very well endowed women find it too uncomfortable not to wear one.
  2. Under endowed women like me would look like a boy without the help of a padded bra.
  3. Many people find the bra-less look unattractive, especially if gravity has done its worst.
  4. Some clothes just look better on with the correct foundation wear underneath.
  5. Some women feel self conscious without a bra, especially in cold weather.
  6. Some workplaces require the staff to wear uniforms and, sometimes, not wearing a bra might be considered inappropriate.
  7. And many women just don't feel "dressed" without a bra.

Yes, that's what I was getting at. Why now would you think you could be being unreasonable, after happily not wearing a bra for years? You don't need validation to do something that has absolutely no impact on anyone else.

I don't wear one. I think it's strange that the second a girl gets buds it seems to be normal to put them in a bra or a crop top that closely resembles one. I wore one unquestioningly for years and I just didn't need to do so! I think people are weirdly scandalised by the outline of a woman's nipples and a bra often rectifies this...I give not a shit.

OP I'd be interested to know your age, size and how many DC you've had. I pretty much never wore one pre-dc (except for work, local government role, would have been frowned upon) and really didn't need one.

I always do now when out of the house but take it off as soon as I'm home for the day.
