to want to destroy this thing with fire (jk, jk but seriously tips for proportional response needed!)

There is a van regularly parked on my street that is fitted with some kind of motion sensing alarm. It only beeps once but very loudly each time it is triggered. We live on quite a narrow residential street and it is set off by every pedestrian and car that passes it and apparently by other things as well (cats? rain? foxes) as it went off innumerable times last night when the street was empty of people and cars. I mean sometimes every few seconds and then not for an hour or so. You can't get used to it because its at such irregular intervals and its impossible to settle the baby (who is up 3 or 4 times a night since the 8 mth regression two months ago anyway) when it is happening.
What can/should I do?
Is this type of alarm legal on a residential street does anyone know?
I feel like waiting until I am much calmer and trying to write a note that manages to be neither aggressive or passive aggressive but appeals to the owners humanity (Oh the HUMANITY) but I am not sure if I have the reasonableness left in me involved in such a thing.
Calling the council - bad form/reasonable/over reaction/not a leg to stand on/right and just?
Deep gratitude for advice!

Write a note saying "do you realise that your vehicle's alarm goes off so often and is very audible in our house especially at night?". Invite them to come and listen even... It's possible they don't even realise!

Unless they're like my dick neighbours over the road... Whos car alarm went off for months on and off and they didn't seem to really care! Mind you I got to the point of hammering on their door in the middle of the night! That helped! grin

I wouldn't be arsed with this. I'd leave a note saying "Oi, twatbadger, the alarm on your shitty van goes off eleventy thousand times a night, and if you don't move it or fix it, you'll soon find a burned out shell sitting on bricks. Toodles, cuntychops"

But that's just me.

haha cuntychops - my new favourite word. Thank you both so much. I won't bother to rein it in too much then... lets hope its parked further away tonight, I don't know whose door to hammer on so might have to resort to jumping up and down on its roof if not!

Is it a Vauxhall? I parked next to one this evening and when I closed my driver's door the alarm went off. Didn't touch their car at all. It made a large beep first & had a bright blue light.

No idea biggreenolives but thats exactly what it does! Nightmare. And when did that become a thing? It only make me want it to be stolen. I'll check make tomorrow when I leave my carefully/not so carefully worded note.

You're not as funny as you think you are blush

Could you locate the sensor and put blue tack on it? Blue tack does block motion sensors.

Yes she is. And no idea why you felt the need to punctuate that snide remark with a coy little smiiie.

I agree with Janet (and good to see you do too, OP) - in this situation I don't think there's a need to balance the tone of the letter, it's fine to be direct and obviously pissed off!

A Vauxhall has a funny griffin as its logo, I went and looked to see what sort of car had an oversensitive alarm so I'd know what never to buy.

Well I loled roachslayer and felt much better for it. What a complete waste of your time to even comment.
Bluetack, bluesbaby is a great idea.
I looked for the van yesterday and its gone! Hence two wonderful nights of sleep. Will carry blue tack and and blunt note in my handbag for the next time it turns up.
I am pretty sure it must be something you buy and add on separately Olives... Hope you have not been kept awake!

Nope, roachslayer you're wrong. That note was funny.

Sunnybitch Sun 06-Mar-16 14:05:16

ILikeUranus Sun 06-Mar-16 14:07:55

She was funny Roachslayer. Move your fucking van.

PuppyMonkey Sun 06-Mar-16 14:15:20

Why the blush after the snidey comment anyway?? grin

Trills Sun 06-Mar-16 14:33:25

You're not as good at using smiley faces as you think you are. hmm

Sunnybitch Tue 08-Mar-16 08:32:02

Did you burn it or jump on the roof op grin

It's hiding from me! Husband said he heard it when he was walking home on sunday but it must be on an adjacent street for now. Poor souls.
