Yeah, what's your point though?

up to and could be. So it could be 7. And it's the telegraph. Nuff said.

I don't really have a point I guess. I was just a little shocked at the article. What the fuck is anyone doing about it?

Clare - they were quoting the EU’s police chief.

Presumably because that is because they have figures of numbers of people who have returned from 'training' countries.

I don't really know what anyone can do about it really - except "keep vigilant". The police will have their surveillance but in reality it is bound to happen given the state of the world.

The UK's doing quite a lot about it. We prosecuted one just recently: Tareena Shakil guilty: Woman who took toddler son to Syria to join Isis convicted.

Though presumably prosecution isn't going to be the right route for dealing with all returnees - it will depend why they came back and what they're up to.

We have prosecuted 'one'?

I agree. That's a lot that's being done. Right there. Yes. Indeed. One down, 5000 to go.

I think it's extremely worrying. I also think it's extremely worrying that a lot of uk citizens are trying to downplay this situation and still feel sorry for all refugees regardless...yes feel sorry for the actual refugees but stop playing martyr for the terrorists, rapists, criminals and actually just the economic migrants who have jumped on the refugee bandwagon.

HaveIGotAClue · 19/02/2016 17:46

What is more worrying is that we seem to have taken our eye off the ball.

It's because if you say something bad about a migrant you are automatically jumped on as 'racist'. Even if race has nothing to do with it.

It will take Paris style attacks to happen here on Uk soil before most mumsnetters will sit up and take notice

Too many 'bleeding hearts' on here

It's a challenging thing for me personally, morally and ethically to decide what side of the fence I'm on! And I'm not joking about that.

I certainly think these training-camp-tourists shouldn't be allowed back in.

There are currently somewhere around 200 different terrorist groups operating today somewhere in the world, and about 70 of them are in UK and/or Europe.

There is no point worrying about sensationalist headlines - you are in no more danger today than you were yesterday, or last month, or last year. There have been fewer 'showstopper' deaths/attacks in recent years than there were during the terror reign of PIRA. The world is no more or no less safe than it ever was.

This. It was scary when the IRA were carrying out their bombing campaign - and I was about 100 ft away from the docklands bomb and once took a coded warning from the IRA when I worked on a news desk. Bad times.

Apparently the population of the EU is 740 million people. I think the odds of meeting one of the 5,000 is pretty small.

There you go op..... Nothing to worry about.

Report
PausingFlatly · 19/02/2016 19:03

Hmm No, the UK hasn't just prosecuted one. That was just the example from a couple of weeks ago.

Different returnees are dealt with in different ways, according to what seems most effective in preventing them (individually and en masse) from becoming a danger. I assume preventing terrorist attacks is an aim we're all agreed on?

There's debate about which means are most effective, especially long term, and what might end up having a negative affect, aiding the terrorists and boosting terrorist recruitment. But that's about effectiveness, not "bleeding hearts".

Since prosecution of ISIS members is already happening, would you like to be done in addition to this?

ExLtEve is quite right btw, what worries me is that people seem to be quite happy to get rid of a raft of Human Rights legislation, in the mistaken belief that we will all be safer for it.

The jihadists are far less worrying than the iceberg of silent supporters that sits underneath them. People prepared to blow themselves up or commit mass shootings may only number 5000. But there are millions who tacitly support their aims and beliefs. And moreover demographic destiny is currently on course to one day hand those people dominance of Europe (50 years or so?).

But hey, it's only our children and grandchildren who will have to live in that world. So nothing to really worry about.

IPityThePontipines · 19/02/2016 19:20

Millions of people do not support ISIS. Where is your evidence for that.

As for the Muslim demographic timebomb nonsense, read this: www.islamophobiawatch.co.uk/the-muslim-tide-that-wasnt/

Even with the increased number of immigrants, Muslims will not be outnumbering non-Muslims in Europe any time ever.

Indeed, IPity.

One of the aims of terrorism, as opposed to other warfare, is to get the target to eat itself - with fear, with oppressive countermeasures, with changes in its culture. The aggressor has no hope of defeating its target militarily - so it does a judo twist and hopes the target will destroy itself.

I watched Peter Hain sitting behind whoever it was during the Labour government who announced control orders. He was physically squirming. Because he was South African-born and knew a bit about living in a society with indefinite detention without trial.

Yanbu. Blame Angela Merkel for the screwing up Europe. If you open the borders and invite migration then of course anyone with criminal intentions will walk straight in.

I agree with pp that our poor children and grandchildren will have to deal with a massive mess and insecurity due to this.
