To Be Completely Obsessed With Konmari?

It's a revelation!

I'm a convert and am spending 2-3 hours a night decluttering, thanking things for their use and their service, and binning them letting them go.

It's so utterly freeing and pleasing.

I've hated my house and it's complete inability to be clean and tidy for YEARS and this is making me think I can actually live somewhere peaceful and lovely.

YANBU

I have done this over the last 6 months and my house pretty much stays tidy now, or takes very little effort to keep it clean and tidy as there is hardly any clutter, and what there is, is things we like and use. Have you been on the Kondo thread on housekeeping, lots of useful tips over there.

Ooooooooh no!! I shall get over there now!

Thanks Goblet!

I must say, the realisation that I've kept things and not used them since I moved in here 5 years ago and the memories attached to things is quite the eye-opener.

It's amazing....so much more than de cluttering. It made me think about consumerism in general (I know that sounds like hyperbole) we accumulate so much shit. I have three kids and thought that mess was just part of the territory. I got rid of so many toys......their rooms are so much better for it. I could go on and on.

I love the concept and have started by doing my clothes, but then stalled.

The idea of actually being properly tidy for more than five minutes is so appealing.

We share Lots of photos Smile

The thanking things and releasing them is a revelation for a (former) hoarder like me.

Yes Lucille, it's scary when you're getting rid of bin bag after bin bag full of stuff!

I've just been looking through my PayPal activity and it's just purchase after purchase, none of which were necessary I'm sure! I've spent £2.5k on stuff last year, half of which I have no idea about.

Some of it was Xmas and birthdays for the DCs, but even there I've tried to cut back on the pointless tat (they all moaned that Santa had given them lame stockings this year as I didn't fill them with total crap!)

I did it and our house is a dream!

It wasn't jam packed by any means but now it is just wonderful to be in. Whizz round and it is tidy - and I have 3 preschoolers. We do loads of craft etc too it is just that everything has a home.

I think we got rid of about half our belongings.I also feel totally different about consumerism too - and basically only shop when something is clearly essential or would improve things noticeably. Our bills have gone down, our savings up.

Love it!

My decluttering started well before KM but I was very inspired by her nevertheless.

My attitude to purchasing new things has completely changed.

There are theories that Konmari is so popular because we are actually all overwhelmed with consumerism and can't actually cope. She is putting a spiritual spin on us dumping all the excess we have all accumulated that we clearly do not need.

My attitude to purchasing new things has completely changed.

Mine too!! I actually noticed it today. I went to the shops and browsing has actually lost it's appeal. I didn't want anything.

We are aiming to get rid of about half of our stuff too, Iv'e done clothes and am just about to start books. My weakness is memorabilia, photos, children's drawings and precious clothes etc. so dreading that a bit, but no going back now.

Yes! I've noticed I'm buying less crap because it totally defeats the object of the whole thing.

And it's starting to creep into my food choices as well - I'm buying things I want to eat (which is invariably healthy oddly enough), rather than what fits into calories etc.

We'll done OP, I am seriously contemplating this & you are convincing me it's worthwhile. I started with my clothes & love how they are folded in my drawers but I've stalled....I think I should buy the book. 2+ hours an evening is quite an investment of your time! What do the other folk in your house make of it all??

I had never heard of this until you started this thread, have looked it up and love the thought. My house is so cluttered with piles of clothes everywhere, I find it hard to throw things away in bulk and do slightly personify objects/feel sad for letting them go -so find it hard to throw away!

Sorry if this has been asked but can anyone recommend a good website/blog/book to get started with it please?

Barbielovesken · 11/02/2016 16:41

SweetSuz the book is called 'The Life Changing Magic of Tidying' by Marie Kondo.

Having heard loads of positive stories about it, I've just downloaded it this second.

I started reading the book. Am planning on having a proper go at it over the school hols.
I'm only a few chapters in, but I have found it really REALLY brilliant to say my thanks to an item I no longer need. I get really emotionally attached to things which trigger memories.
I cleared out ds small room last weekend. I got rid of 10 bin bags of stuff. Loads of hand me down clothes for a friend, bag fulls of toys for the charity shop and one small bag for the bin.
His room has been tidy since.
He likes it the way it is, and now makes his bed every morning to keep it looking nice. Smile
I'm going to have a read of the other threads to inspire me more!!

seasalt there's only me and my DS (14) in the house - he's utterly bemused as according to him, none of his stuff sparks joy.

Yet, he's a hoarder of much crap...............

My DP is in shock at my 180 in attitude to decluttering. We've said for years that he's the tidier and I'm the cleaner. Not anymore! I'm off work tomorrow and I will be sorting through my clothes
