School uniform - I agree with uniform and I realise I chose a school with a uniform policy, BUT ....

.... sometimes I feel they are making a mountain out of a mole hill, and wasting too much time and energy on it:

DD(14), wore a collared white school shirt yesterday, top button done up, with a skirt, and we had a letter home.

She should have worn her open neck white shirt, as she had a skirt on. Had she worn trousers then the buttoned up collared shirt would have been fine, with a tie. Not allowed to mix the two.

Detention will be given if it happens again.

Only another 16 months to go ...................

Fgs thats ridiculious.

Dd2 is in primary. I sent her in grey school trouseurs. She has been told shes not allowed to wear them again ad they are the wrong shade.Angry

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 09/02/2016 10:46

yanbu
I'm in favour of a dresscode instead of uniform.
what a farce, your poor dd

ButEmilylovedhim · 09/02/2016 10:47

That does take the biscuit, doesn't it?! Very arbitary. Why not the other way round, for example. Rules for rules sake. And I am in favour of strict school uniform but that's just daft.

dementedpixie · 09/02/2016 10:51

Bloody crazy! Ours specifies white shirt, grey trousers/skirts/jumper/cardigan and the tie. They do not say which type of shirt or which shade of grey so not everyone will match 100% but they all look smart.

I agree, I'm very much in favour of school uniform, but that's a bit bonkers!
I'm not sure what that sort of rule is hoping to achieve? Surely it would be better to just have one option, for example buttoned up shirt and tie, with either skirt or trousers.

What a waste of someone's time as well, having to organise a letter to come home.

SuburbanRhonda · 09/02/2016 10:52

She should have left the top button undone. No one would have noticed Smile

dementedpixie · 09/02/2016 10:53

Yeah cos all the boys are just dying to wear a skirt to school!! I have never seen a boy in a skirt and my kids school and they girls can wear trousers if they want. They are talking crap....and anyway, so what if they did wear a skirt, the world would not end!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/02/2016 10:58

some crazy rules about!! I don't get why they are so uptight about it all. As long as they look smart.

Demented - I wondered that myself but I bet they would notice as it wouldn't look like a 'revere open collar', they'd notice the stiff collar, madness.

Eugh. As a teacher, I really hate those kinds of petty rules. So much time is wasted arguing about tiny, silly things. As long as they have made a good attempt to look smart, I really don't want to waste ten minutes correcting their uniform before letting them in the room.

My old school introduced clip on ties, which solved a lot of arguments relating to the size of knots and length of ties.

notsohappyyetmuchhappier · 09/02/2016 11:04

I don't understand why 'boys and girls can wear skirts and trousers' would be an issue!

Gileswithachainsaw · 09/02/2016 11:05

Wtf.

really.

it's a white shirt. seriously who the fuck would care Hmm

TooMuchOfEverything · 09/02/2016 11:05

I would never send my child to a school that enforced skirts on girls. (Luckily I have a choice).

Ellybellyboo · 09/02/2016 11:09

YANBU!

I'm in favour of school uniform on the whole, but my daughter's high school makes a ridiculous fuss. Given their last Ofsted report and exam results, I think they've got more important things to be worrying about - the cynical part of me thinks its a deliberate ploy - make enough fuss about uniform, the parents will all be up in arms about it and they won't notice how shit we really are.

So far this term my DD has had a uniform strike for wearing boots to school in the pissing rain, with her normal school shoes in her bag and then for wearing a thin cardigan under her blazer, that wasn't actually noticed by anyone until her last lesson whenshe was getting changed for PE

I find it very hard to support the school when they start with this nonsense to be honest

My DCs Primary school have started getting picky over socks of all things! DS 6 has the ones with coloured toes/heels and some have a small bad of colour at the top (with days of the week written on the sole) - these are apparently not adhering to the uniform policy, and if they are continued to be worn will result in golden time!! They're bloody socks!

JennyOnAPlate · 09/02/2016 11:11

I'm amazed that any school can get away with banning skirts for girls in this day and age. I had to wear skirts to school and tights had to be 70 denier (God forbid any skin should show through!!) the hot summers were bloody awful and I used to end up with an itchy red raw rash all over my legs. My parents never considered mentioning it to the school though Hmm

insan1tyscartching · 09/02/2016 11:12

Dd's school are introducing a blazer this September, don't mind too much tbh but dc have to ask permission to remove their sweaters in the summer and some of the teachers are arses and refuse.Imagine that there will be plenty of dc coming out of school overheated after being refused permission to remove the compulsory sweater and blazer when leaving their glass fronted school that heats up like a furnace in summer.

OliviaDunham · 09/02/2016 11:12
  • will result in LOSS of golden time

I'm generally not that keen on uniforms, although not rabidly anti. Just as well as I know of no schools near here without a compulsory uniform, so it's a bit of an illusion of choice (as with so much about schools).

That really seems unnecessarily petty, OP, but at least no actual detention was given, so it could have been worse.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 09/02/2016 11:21

Do schools also not realise that parents might just have other things on their mind, as well.
ie Bills, Mortgages, Jobs ect etc
