Likely that iabu as not experiences in this area. Last Wednesday I applied for a job in a private international school - ive heard nothing so far so assume I didn't get it but is it standard not to hear either way for so long? I think it's a bit rude seeing as I had to go to London for it but perhaps it's normal.
Ive only ever had interviews for jobs as teacher in State schools where you find out same day most of the time

Yes, it can take so long. It is generally a bad sign but not always. Sometimes it is due to letters only being sent to unsuccessful candidates so they take time to process. It may be that they are waiting for the successful candidate to confirm. They may be waiting for references to come back. They may have other positions which could be offered but aren't finalised yet....

I think give it a bit more time, maybe another week or so, and after that you could give them a ring to ask.

Thanks - not sure of normal practise in private sector. I don't expect to get it but I would like to know! Will follow up after 2 weeks if necessary

Ring them and ask when you can expect to hear. Makes you look keen, and if you are not the preferred candidate then it might bump you up the list, so if the first candidate says no, then your chances are better.

So, 2 and a half weeks and 1 email later and still no response. Now I'm pissed off and think it's very rude not respond at all

hmmmm, sounds quite unprofessional. They should at least reply to you to tell you where you stand or where they are at in the hiring process.

Sometimes it does take some time for the relevant persons to get all the CVs in and review them. 2.5 weeks is not a very long time in the grand scheme

That said, any employer who takes so long risks losing the good candidates to another employer who is faster off the mark and shows more interest.

Lots of employers don't reply to unsuccessful candidates. It sucks.
