AIBU?

Who is BU, me or superdrug re make up exchange?

Am quietly seething about something I know is petty in the grand scheme of things. I bought new foundation yesterday, simply a new bottle of one I already have and like, an 8 quid maybelline one. When I got home I saw that the one I'd picked had been in the wrong slot, so right foundation, wrong colour. I tried to take it back today for an exchange and was refused on the basis they don't return makeup. I had the receipt, and the foundation is sealed with a huge plastic seal and security patch over the lid. Apparently this is superdrug policy, though it doesnt say so anywhere i could see. I'm just cross as now I'm left with something I can't use and am out of pocket too. It makes no sense that it's a blanket policy when there's plenty of stuff in there that isn't sealed that I could apparently take back for any old reason I liked. So, forgiving the extremely petty nature of my problem, wibu to go back tomorrow to speak to the manager? I just want the right shade, can prove I bought it, and it's sealed!

They should definitely exchange if it's sealed.

Nowhere will take back makeup unless its faulty. You didn't check you had the right one, it's eight quid, YABU

If you'd ordered it online and been sent the wrong one then it'd be a different matter though

YANBU.

Speak to the manager.

Legally Superdrug don't have to offer an exchange or refund but it wouldn't hurt to ask to speak to the manager.

I bought a Superdrug own brand foundation, and the lady who recommended it said if I didn't get on with it I could return it for a refund or exchange, so maybe not a blanket policy. Did you ask to speak to a supervisor or manager?

Same thing-concealer, got to just outside the door, realised it was wrong shade. Nope, no refund.

YANBU - Boots once refunded a BB cream I had purchased and used because it turned me orange - no quibbling

That's crap. I have made similar mistake in Boots. No problem, swapped instantly for right shade. Ludicrous.

I've exchanged mascara before as I used it and it was dry and crusty and basically shit!

YANBU I've returned makeup before that I've used and had an allergic reaction to

Ghosty, I've done the same in boots. I'm not usually so scatty, honest, but boots exchanged no problem. I hate our local superdrug anyway, it's small, dirty, understaffed and almost impossible to get around with a buggy, so I'll definately be going to boots from now on. I'm sure they'll be quaking in their boots to lose my custom too...

I feel sure I've exchanged before in similar circumstances, although I think I might just have grabbed the new one off the shelf and presented it as a done deal!

They can't sell it again though. Same with food and with drugs. Too risky. If someone used it on their face and there was damage, injury or worse Superdrug would be liable. Say it was a fake bought off the internet in identical packaging - they'd have no way of knowing.

Would you let your teenage daughter use makeup that someone had returned - even if it were unopened? I wouldn't.

Hard luck - it happened to me too - exact same thing. Not great but YABU

But blue, I could apparently return bubble bath having done God knows what to it. This has their security tag still on, and I have the receipt. If I'd opened it, or had no receipt then fair play. But glad to know I'm not the only one that this has happened to in superdrug.

How can they not sell it again if it's never been open??

YANBU

What can be done to unopened make up to make it so dodgy?

As its sealed YANBU.

I'd return to the store and ask to speak to the manager

Superdrug's policies are nuts. I found two lipsticks in a discontinued colour a while back, I was delighted. But they refused to let me buy them as they were no longer on the stock system (despite being on the shop floor).

I had the same thing in Boots so it's not just Superdrug - seal on etc

That's not strictly true. Clinique exchanged a foundation when I got home and saw that the tester they had used on my face was too dark.

Report
firesidechat · 26/01/2016 22:19

I mean this isn't true:

Nowhere will take back makeup unless its faulty. You didn't check you had the right one, it's eight quid, YABU

Iv worked in cosmetics for years. We absolutely would swap it if it was the wrong shade and had evidently not been used.

If I were you I'd contact superdrug on their Facebook and Twitter and I'd try contacting maybelline direct as they may be able to help.

Definitely not true, I picked up and paid for the wrong moisturiser (stupid Clinique's moisture surge range with two very similar pots of different product). I left the shop, came back ten minutes later, swap effected, no quibbles.

I was sold two mascaras in Space NK instead of a mascara and eyeshadow, the SA got kerfuffled. I came back 3 days later to exchange and again, no quibbles.

Id ask to speak to a manager
I accidentally picked up the wrong lipstick in Superdrug
It was sealed, I took it back the next day and the assistant said "I'm not sure, please wait and I'll call the manager" and the manager said it was fine. It's hard to explain but it was a seal and a sticker so she could see it hadn't been tampered with.
