Grammar mistakes that drive you crazy

I have two:

He hung himself. Instead of he hanged himself.

It was so fun. Instead it was either "such fun" or "so much fun"

What are your grammar bug bears?

MuttonDressedAsMutton Sat 23-Jan-16 15:15:21

There are too many and there is too little time. Plus this will descend into mayhem with the baying mob shouting from the back that grammar and spelling do not matter, language evolves, it's discriminatory to care and so on and so on. Good luck OP but five bucks and my right tit says it goes exactly as I said grin

Can you borrow me twenty quid?

I know I lent a tenner off you already but I brought a new dress today so I'm skint.

I couldn't wear my old dress because I can't seem to loose my baby weight.

Do you have any advise for me?

Or am I been out of order?

grin

Could of instead of could have is my main one.

SpoiltMardyCow Sat 23-Jan-16 15:20:08

Worra.... what you are describing in such vivid splendor is the vernacular.

And I LOVE it.

Ain't no excuse for bad grammar though.

I may just hide this thread - it's making my eyes hurt!

LassWiTheDelicateAir Sat 23-Jan-16 15:22:24

Liberal splashings of the word "that".

In most cases it adds nothing except to the word count ; or it should be replaced by "which"

WorraLiberty Sat 23-Jan-16 15:23:31

I actually had to think whether I'd accidentally got 'advise' and 'loose' right then.

I've been around the internet far too long blush

theycallmemellojello Sat 23-Jan-16 15:26:41

Wait, fun can be an adjective, right? That's not an error.

Gruntfuttock Sat 23-Jan-16 15:27:10

So many people think that you pluralise words by putting an apostrophe and and 's' at the end i.e. vacancy's instead of vacancies and baby's instead of babies. I don't know why this belief is so common.

CremeEggThief Sat 23-Jan-16 15:27:20

Was instead of were, e.g. you was.
Seen instead of saw.
Done instead of did.
Me instead of my.
Double negatives.

They are the worst.

katmanwho Sat 23-Jan-16 15:27:44

How did he die?

He hung himself. He hanged himself.

I should know - what's the difference?

Imustgodowntotheseaagain Sat 23-Jan-16 15:28:20

Effect/affect. There's a difference!

OurBlanche Sat 23-Jan-16 15:28:43

You forgot sat seated

Blech!

Tartyflette Sat 23-Jan-16 15:28:43

There are just too many around these days. I silently judge the perpetrators instead.
Ah 'that' -- I spent many happy hours as a sub-editor excising every single example from copy. "If in doubt, cut it out," was the prevailing mantra.

NinaSimoneful Sat 23-Jan-16 15:29:43

'Try and'
'Revert back'

DHs is 'Plug out'

Tartyflette Sat 23-Jan-16 15:29:50

Er - paintings are hung. Men are hanged.

katmanwho Sat 23-Jan-16 15:31:08

Can you hang this painting?
Can you hang this man?

So - why are paintings hung but men hanged?

theycallmemellojello Sat 23-Jan-16 15:32:17

Supposedly hung is for other things - he hung a picture - where as hanged is reflexive - he hanged himself. Personally I find the meaning of the word outweighs any negative feelings I could have about grammar.

EvilTwins Sat 23-Jan-16 15:32:41

I was sat.

I done my homework.

Can I go toilet?

She done it.

Tartyflette Sat 23-Jan-16 15:32:47

The present tense is the same, the past tense differs.

IncidentalAnarchist Sat 23-Jan-16 15:33:36

Reflexive pronoun abuse kills me.
'Please contact myself'
No. Fuck off. You don't sound clever. You sound like a twat. angry

MizK Sat 23-Jan-16 15:38:25

I brought a new dress.

I had a bowl of cereals.

And yes to the reflexive pronoun abuse! Much favoured by people with affected, nasal, smarmy voices.

Topseyt Sat 23-Jan-16 15:41:02

Most of what has already been said, with would of, should of and could of being particular pet hates.

"Except" used when it should be "accept". For example "I except that". I saw it the other day and could have just screamed!
