AIBU?

Am I doing something bad? Work related

Big changes at work, I've been unhappy for a while and want a chance to grow at work

Boss has looked at all roles and thinks he may create a new role for me. Something that looks good.

But if would be taking work away from a contractor who I get on really well with. The person could be slotted in another role if she wanted to stay with the company.

Am I being unreasonable to want a new role but would affect someone else's role?

You take your chances as a contractor. Good pay and flexibility comes at a risk. Don't worry about it, it sounds like they'll provide for your friend anyway and if she doesn't like the work, I'm sure she'll find something else.

Exactly what Littlefoot said.

YANBU.

I've done about three years as a contractor. As others have said, as a contractor, you take your chances; there are pros and cons, and your colleague is about to encounter one of the cons. But it's really between her and your employer, and although it's great that you care, please don't let her situation influence your decision. Go for it!

You should definitely go for it. Part and parcel of being a contractor is that you have to be flexible and fit into the needs of the business. You need to think of your own career and job satisfaction
