AIBU?

Bloody aspartame poisoning...

FoofooLeSnoo · 11/01/2016 14:46

Is not real and has been disproved time and time again. Aibu to get cross every time someone says its toxic blah blah blah! There is one group of people who should avoid it if they have a certain rare condition otherwise it's completely safe.
Rant over!

Disproved by who? People in the pay of the companies which use it? Where's your source?

But it tastes really horrible and so does stevia.

Yes it does taste horrid. Here come the conspiracy theorists. Off we go!

Real or not, it tastes crap.

May be so. Chocolate gives me migraines. But it's neither are toxic.

It pisses me off too.

Some people are sensitive to it. My dd doesn't do well with tomatoes, but tomatoes are not dangerous to most of the population.

Aspartame is fine. Not one bit of solid proof that is anything other than safe. A few people getting migraines over it does not make it this evil dangerous thing.

YANBU op it's a lot of faux science and bull poo

Some people may react to it - I react to spinach... I don't claim it causes cancer though!

Hmm, do I know you? I have, this morning, provided info to someone who was querying its safety.....

Grin at Snuffle, I think I'll join in you with a diet coke.

I agree OP, it does my head in.

Yanbu.

I can't eat rice or anything with rice in it. I ate protein cookies once and ended up in hospital after I collapsed in pain. The cookies had rice flour in. I was stupid and didn't check when my friend gave me them to try as he was selling them in his supplement shop.

It doesn't mean rice or rice flour are toxic or will poison anyone else.

I hate when people use a few cases of something not agreeing with someone as proof it's dangerous.

It's tastes crap though. Although I prefer it to stevia

It is toxic for dogs and just two or three pieces of gum containing aspartame can kill a small dog.

I have a few friends who are fiercely anti-aspartame. I've had a lot of grief from them about me giving DD squash with no added sugar (she's always refused water...squash was better than dehydration). They're under the impression that the sugared versions are healthier, despite the very well known dangers of excessive sugar consumption. Load of tosh. Yes, some people react badly to aspartame. I'm allergic to aspirin...doesn't mean I discourage everyone else from taking it.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 11/01/2016 15:03

I didn't realise it was supposed to be dangerous.

I do, however, believe it is evil. Anything with an aftertaste that bad must be evil.

It pisses me off. I've got a relative who posts that shit all the time. She's the same person who thinks the flu jab gives you the flu and childhood vaccinations are a conspiracy. She was the first to moan when her dd got whooping cough...

No it isn't. It's gum containing the artificial sweetener Xylitol that causes insulin storm in dogs, and sends them into a hypoglycaemic coma...

Yes, but you're not a dog, I hope? Grapes and chocolate also kill dogs, are you avoiding those too?

Unless you have phenylketonuria there's no convincing evidence that it causes harm.

The carbon dioxide dissolved in the Coke making it acidic and causing tooth decay on he other hand...

Eastpoint

Xylitol causes a rapid blood sugar crash and can be fatal to dogs, but not Aspartame.

Where is the definitive source for it being safe?

Report
SnuffleGruntSnorter · 11/01/2016 15:07

offers sugar free mentos to fellow carbonated beverage swillers. Dons safety goggles

Report
SnuffleGruntSnorter · 11/01/2016 15:08

House, it's very, very difficult to prove that anything is definitively safe. I don't think there's that kind of proof for anything - medicines or foodstuffs that you ingest all the time.

Convincing, robust, unbiased and reproducible evidence of harm though, that's what we're looking for here.
