AIBU?

To be a bit baffled by the paternity storylines in Eastenders and Emmerdale

Lighthearted-I do understand this isn't real life Grin

In both Eastenders and emmerdale there are storylines running where a baby's father is between 2 men.

In both cases one man is the same race as the mother, and the other man is a different race.

In both instances it is looking like it is the differing race man who is the father despite the other man believing he's the father.

Is it me, or is this a bit far fetched? Or is Arthur really the son of God?

It's not far fetched that women have sex with two men and tell one he is the dad when it's the other. And no, Arthur is not the son of God.

it's not real!

I'm puzzled by the Coronation Street one, Carla is clearly in her 40's and the bloke who is supposed to be her dad is also clearly in his 40's what crap

As Arthur would only be a quarter Iranian I don't think it's that far fetched that Martin would believe him to be his. Stacey is suffering from post partum psychosis hence the son of god thing.

Don't watch Emmerdale!

going it's not the number of potential fathers, it's the genetic make up im questioning.

red fuck me- if you think Johnny looks like he's in his 40's can I borrow your glasses for when I look in the mirror.

When I read Eastenders and Arthur in the same sentence, I would assume Fowler, husband of Pauline.

It's quite rare for soap character names to be reused (at all, let alone in what seem like the blink of an eye) isn't it?

Carla's backstory says she was born in 1975, and the actor playing her was born in 1973.

Johnny's age/dob isn't known (AFAIK) But the actor was born in 1955.

red Wikipedia is your friend- he is 60.

coronationstreet.wikia.com/wiki/Richard_Hawley

1955 it says on this. So he's ... 61.

There's a few babies that have been named after their fictional relatives in soaps.

Winnie Arthur was also the real name of Fatboy, so that's three Arthurs that have been in EE.

I'm baffled that given Stacy and Kush had a one night stand they didn't use a condom. Crap safe sex advice from the Eastenders writers.

Character names being reused is far from rare.

Tracy Barlow currently has a Rob and a Robert on the go.

It is very strange though given the number of available names.

Kush and Kirin are both fairly light-skinned. And Stacey, Martin and Adam are all dark. I think it's perfectly plausible (in that respect I mean - clearly it's ridiculous that Kush is Baby Arthur's dad because he and Stacey only kissed).

Robert is from twenty years ago. Same with Beth and Bethany. One is 'from the past' so to speak.

Eh savoy?

It's still the same name though?

winnie baby Arthur is named after his grandfather arthur fowler (except Martin fowler isn't really the baby's father).

Stacey's daughter Lilly is pretty dark so if Arthur was dark, couldn't she argue that Stacey has dark children for some reason. Also, as others have mentioned, Kush is only half Iranian so the baby would only be quarter Iranian.
Also see this from Jeremy Kyle:

I mean that when they named Rob Donavan they probably never thought that they would be bringing back a quite minor character from two decades ago.

Why not reuse names though? In RL we all know lots of people with the same name eg I have three close friends called Claire and my DM and SIL are both called Sarah. It almost feels more realistic!

Thanks!

You can tell I'm a former watcher, not a current one.

And Lauren I think they don't generally reuse names because it isn't RL, and if characters are talking about someone else, it's rapidly dull (in compressed soap dialogue) to explain who you mean. In RL speech is much more rambling. Also you only need to be sure the person you're talking to knows who you mean, not that it's clear to the whole audience.

Adam (Emmerdale) and Jason (Corrie) are brothers,in real life. Adam's parents are both white but Jason's mixed race.
Both are lush Grin

I'm still not convinced Kush is the father.
