I am a sales administrator within my company. So this involves some salesly stuff, as well as admin.

We revently (say the last 6 mo/make phonecalls and obtain appointments from those communications. He gets commission for each appointment from his communication that is made and sat.

I have been with the company for 3.5 years. In the time I have been here when an interested party calls about our product I take basic details to give a snapshot of their business and arrange for one of our salesmen to call them back, have a more in depth discussion and book an appointment to go and see them etc. This has always been how it has been done.

Recently my colleague has been sending out mailings. The other day someone called in, our system popped up that my colleague had emailed them but when I inquired as to where they had heard about us, they said their boss's friend had recommended us. No mention of the email. As my colleague had emailed them, I passed this to him after taking some basic details and he booked an appointment for one of the sales team.

Yesterday another interested customer called. They had seen us online. I booked an appointment for one of my colleagues (the only one who I do book appts for as he's the GM) and the GM said just check with R it isn't from his emails. I did so and R said it wasn't but that it rung a bell. I asked if he had emailed them and he said no. I said that I cant see any record created for that company, as such, they can't have been on his mailing.call list. He then said something along the lines of, well, I could be missing out on commission with you taking these calls. I didn't know what to make of what he said and explained I always asked where they had heard from us, and gave the previous day's call as an example and that they had said different to having received an email but because a record populated with their details, I knew he had emailed them and therefore passed it to him.

He then got a little shirty and said yes but I could miss commission if you don't ask. I tried to explain that they will populate a record if he has entered them so it would be nigh on impossible for me to miss one.

He then said well to be honest, I think it would be better if I took all the new enquiries. I said well why, you won't earn anything on those who have seen us online etc and called in, only those you have communicated with. He said he didn't mind that and that at least it gets the salesmen appointments.

I was a little peeved as it seemed like he is trying to change a process that has been in place for years (it was in place before I even started here), trying to take one of my functions and I felt a little uneasy that he wouldn't mind not getting commission on appts he makes that he hasn't communicated with. I just said well, I can't say that you can do that. You will be taking part of my role. Please speak with the GM and see what he says.

AIBU to be a little miffed? In some ways, it would make it much easier for me because tbh, I hate taking details etc. I have now taken on more admin roles that require more time and as such it would also let me concentrate on those. But at the same time, he would be taking part of my role.

Confused

But would you miss any commission? Or goals on which your wages or bonus are based on?

I think you should raise it with the GM, rather than letting him put his spin on it.

If you don't like doing it, then it does you a favour, however there needs to be a fair war of allocating sales, and by extension, commission.

If I were you I'd go to the GM about this.
But if it would help you then take him up on his offer and get on with other things.

It does make sense if he's making appts anyway, however, it's not the way its ever been done before. Plus, if it were me, I wouldnt bust my arse to get appointments for which I wouldnt be getting paid for. Which my role doesnt get commission for those appointments, hence why ti has always been an info gathering exercise and the allocated salesperson does the running etc as they will get the commission.

He's obviously hoping he'll get commission somehow. He'll Soon realise it's not worth the extra effort and focus on his job. Hopefully it'll free you up for other things?

I don't fully understand how this works. But could he be planning to lie about how they heard and get additional commission?
