AIBU?

To ask any techy people?

I have an old mobile. It's dying and ds has now smashed the screen Sad

I want to keep my sim (on 3, one-plan. Unlimited everything including Internet for £16 a month)

My iPad is also on 3 (lucky, not deliberate!)

Can I just put my sim in the iPad and keep paying my bill?

I have done it short-term in the past and never had a problem.

Will 3 be bothered what device my sim is in?

Will I have to use it to send a text every month?

Anybody know... Without guessing!

I will ask in car phone warehouse later, when I go in to town.

I think you can put your SIM into any device you want. 3 won't give a shit what technology you're using, as long as you keep paying the bill.

When you say your iPad is on 3, do you mean you don't have a SIM/dongle for it, but that's the network you chose for 4G?

This will be fine.

Why would you have to send a text every month?

You can send texts from iPads anyway.

The iPad has a sim slot but is used on wifi almost exclusively.

I have put the phone sim in a couple of times, when the phone decided it wasn't going to make the wifi.

Some of the old pay and go phones had to be used every month or they would be locked? I don't know if this is the same ?

I got the sim and phone 4 years ago. iPad not long after.
After 2 years, my bill reduced from £40 to £16, as I had "paid for the phone" and went on to rolling 1 month cheaper contract.

But nobody else is offering unlimited Internet for £16 a month, so I really want to keep that.

I will take the sim out of the phone and keep it as an iPod. Put the sim in the iPad purely for Internet.

Maybe get a pay and go phone for emergencies.

Does this seem sensible?

You own the devices. You pay for the SIM. It is up to you how you arrange the latter into the former! 3 won't care.

Keep the SIM deal and use the card in your iPad. This essentially turns your iPad into a big phone. You can call people from your iPad via Facetime/Skype, so would you need an emergency Pay As You Go?

Some phones are "locked" to only work with SIM cards from a particular operator (e.g. a phone might only work on 3, not on O2). It's unlikely that your iPad will be locked in this way.

It's true that some older PAYG SIM cards needed to be used ta least once every 3 months or they would be assumed to be "unused" and be cut off. This is a contract though, not PAYG? Either way, it's likely that using it to connect to the internet counts as "usage", so you won't have a problem.

Could you put the SIM into a phone for long enough to call up 3 customer services and check whether there is a usage requirement?

I think the problem might be that the 3 deal is a good 'un so they might be looking to ditch contracts if possible, hence OP being worried about not making calls or texting.
You can get cheap unlocked phones for an emergency. Or buy a locked one for a tenner and send a text once a month.

Ooh. Thanks amic.

What else is in that deal?

Can I tether the iPad to it?

Does it come with a phone?
