Living in a small village that is now essentially an island having been cut off by water, I just want to say what amazing community spirit and support I have witnessed in the last few hours! People coming together and help eachother out in the most extreme of ways, businesses opening to offer overnight shelters, emergency services working tirelessly, and strangers offering to go above and beyond to help those in need. Thank goodness we can still have some faith in humanity

Hey MrsSocks, people like you and your community have been in my thoughts tonight, I am so glad you are all looking after each other.

I am praying the weather give you all a break as soon as possible and you come out of this with as little damage as possible.

It's really lovely to hear about such generosity and as you say, community spirit. I hope you are safe and warm.

Thank you mistressmerry, I think the sock family have been lucky compared to others. We are still in our home, and still have our electric which is more than I can say for friends and neighbours. It is truly devastating to witness however everyone is rallying round which is a joy to behold! Thank you for you kind words

Heard a story today about the place I used to live. A bus had been stuck for 3 hours in the snow on Friday night and then managed to get to the town I used to live and was stuck again for 3 hours. A local man came out his house and made a hot cup of tea for every person on the bus :)

Where I live now we've had bad flooding but we can still get out of the estate - well we can just now but waiting to see what happens at next high tide :(

Police in Cleveland were tweeting saying a cuppa wouldn't go amiss for some of the poor chaps out redirecting traffic, this afternoon.

YANBU, OP. Hope you have as peaceful a night as you can expect. I'm feeling rather highly coiled from the loud wind we've had, today (on high ground, too) and the effect it's had on the kids, (not much rain, here, but lots of water flowing down to the low points). Hoping to sleep now and hoping I don't wake up to news as bad as it could be for so many people. Been watching the situation unfold in Northumberland weardale and especially Cumbria with a great degree of horror.

Im south cumbria op, ot's scary wild out there tonight. Doesnt seem to be showing any signs of dying down either 😟

Lots of people I know are stranded and two young boys have gone missing, hope to god theyre safe and just being selfish teens not thinking to say theyre sleeping out

It's good to see just wish it was in different circumstances.

We're in north east and it's dreadfully windy/wet and a lot of places have flooded. Trees coming down and electricity off.

Family in Cumbria who have been flooded. We're waiting for water to go down before we know how badly.

I am so fed up of it now. This is the fourth weekend in a row that we've had storms. We were supposed to be getting the train to visit my mum today and can't as all the lines are closed and some of the roads.

Just want a nice crisp winter's day!

In Scotland and house not flooded but we are stuck in the estate with no access for cars in or out. Police not allowing walking in or out with waders etc either.

People really do look out for each other where i live too.
I'm up North and have been feeling a bit rattled and scared by the wind - ferocious is the only word I can think of. Roof tiles and concrete flying through the air and smashing made me get back in the house.

Hope the emergency services can get a well deserved break now it's calmer.

We're in Co.Durham and although there's been flooding, most of our village is higher than the river, it's not been too bad mainly affecting traffic and livestock and the wind has only brought down a lot of debris, although we were watching our big trees with trepidation. My heart goes out to the communities affected by the flooding especially seeing it's not long since they were last hit.

South Cumbria here too. Got off lightly in my bit. Main roads flooded so can't go far but at least it's not our homes.

Lancashire here. Very wet and windy all day yesterday but we seem to have settled for the time being. DS1 is on a weekend school trip in Keswick where the river has burst its banks. Hope they can get back ok today.

My parents have been stuck in their town - roads only opened this afternoon and three of the four routes out are still shut. The play parks are all underwater and the roads are ruined.

Just seen the devastating pictures of the flooding in Carlisle/ Cumbria.

What I didn't see was any crisis line to help our people .

Why not?

We are North West but thankfully not flooded.
My heart goes out to those affected and we have been trying to contact friends in Carlisle but been unable to do so.
I know there house will be ok, but fear for their business premises.

The roads are closed North of Preston, so I heard.

Our Island got totally flooded Thursday night & under a red weather warning all weekend. The local community spirit was amazing.

People posting on FB about pre-paid rooms at the Lancaster holiday inn they couldn't use due to boat cancellations so please could someone stranded at Heysham sleep there. Local people in our main town offering dinner & a bed for the night if needed when all main roads were shut.

Local businesses offering their 4x4s to ensure home carers can get to vulnerable people.

I hate the damage that has been done by the floods & the wind, but it is lovely to see how the local community pulls together to sort stuff out

I grew up in Kendal and the pictures I've been seeing on facebook from people who still live there are unreal - I barely recognise where some of them have been taken there's so much river!

I don't know about community spirit though - I rang my mum to check she was ok and it turned out I knew more about what was going on than she does! (she doesn't do social media). She lives up a big hill and said 'oh yes, I heard the river has gone over on the news.' Understatement of the year, mother!

I live about 5 miles from the worst flooded areas in Carlisle. It is absolutely devastating at any time but so near to Christmas is just a kick in the teeth I honestly can't believe it's happened again as I thought I would never see it again in my lifetime.

I'm not sure what I can do to help as at home alone with 3 young children but if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate them as feel terrible sitting in my warm dry house when there are families suffering so close.

Also chrome100 your comment annoyed me a little as we are talking about people losing their homes/businesses/jobs for the foreseeable future so close to Christmas so your train being cancelled is a minor problem compared to some!! (Unless your mother is ill etc then I apologise)

It was heartbreaking seeing a Christmas tree submerged by that cold, filthy water.

We are so good at raising funds for causes outside our own country and so bad at doing it in our country.

What word has their been from our government.

( rememembering the Somerset levels fiasco two years ago)
