AIBU?

To take a visit to A&E?

I had a laproscopic sterilisation Wednesday the week before last (11 days ago) I've gotten over the worst of the pain, and returned to work this last Wednesday (7 days post op) in now in a fair amount of pain, part of it feels like I can feel the clips scratching the inside, I'm not sure if this is even possible.

DH and I are having a disagreement over it, my view is that I've probably just over done it assuming I can return to normal and just need to take it easy (not picking up heavy kids, walking pulling dog etc) his view is that 11 days post op I shouldn't still be needing pain killers and that I need to go to A&E.

Mumsnet thoughts?

You should ring the ward you had it done and they will probably ask you to go in.
Check your temperature that might go higher if you have an infection. (But might not so dont ignore if you don't have a temp)

could you phone the ward you were on post op to ask for advice?

WishIWasWonderwoman · 29/11/2015 09:04

(I am not a medical professional.)

I would say definitely see a GP at least. In my view you would not be unreasonable to go to A&E but if you feel that's too much you should at least schedule an urgent appointment with a GP.

Or yes phone ward as recommended above.

If in doubt check it out

IwishIwasinNewYork · 29/11/2015 09:07

Sorry you are in pain. I think people should avoid A&E wherever possible to keep it for emergencies, but agree phone the ward. Do you have a walk in medical centre anywhere near you instead of going to casualty?

I'd phone the ward. I had a laparscopic oophectomy last Monday and on Friday day/evening felt hot and shivery like I had flu. Went to bed and ignored DH's suggestion that it was possibly infected. Yesterday morning woke up feeling worse and have ended up having to have the wound cleaned by the nurse at A&E and a super-strong course of antibiotics. Nurse was very cross that I'd waited to visit and pushed home just how important it is to get advice post-op.

Go to A&E. It's not wasting NHS time if you're in pain after something like that.

im a nurse.....you should get yourself check out....phone the ward, or go to A and E or walk in centre....could be infection or anything...youshould not be in pain 11 days post of from laproscopic surgery

Potatoface2 · 29/11/2015 09:42

that should say post op....been to work all night!

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/11/2015 09:50

I think you should. hours can make a huge difference with infections. it's the difference between going home with a few pulls and a hospital stay on ivs

the whole point of the laproscopic procedures is that they are less invasive and recovery is quicker. so I'd be worried if 11 days later I was in more pain than you were befire.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. I tried the ward, but got no answer (I'm not sure if the are open to the public over the weekend) but I called 111, who got an out of hours gp to call me back and advised I go in to get it checked out.

I'm not a fan of going to A&E for any old thing, but even if I waited to tomorrow and called my GP, I wouldn't get an appointment until next week at best.
