AIBU?

to think The Wright Stuff is largely created from trawling Mumsnet?

I am on maternity leave and have somehow managed to work watching at least part of The Wright Stuff into my daily routine. Most of the time I like it (except when he's blatantly rude to callers, even if they are being a dick!) but it's becoming increasingly obvious to me that the topics being discussed are often taken from here. At the moment it's walking kids to the door at school. There's usually a couple a week.

Usually there's no major problem with this but sometimes the conversation is a bit condescending as they flash up screen shots of the threads with almost an undercurrent of those 'silly mums on mumsnet.' And is it now someone's job to sit here refreshing the page, hoping for something juicy? Stop spying on us!

AIBU to think it's a bit unfair to target this site more than others? Can't think I've seen topics drawn from other forums.

It's a good lesson in remembering that these sorts of spaces on the internet are not private spaces.

You are essentially stood in a large room full of people broadcasting everything you say with a megaphone - it just so happens that the room is the entire world.

Message boards create the illusions of intimacy and privacy as you become a 'community' and it's easy to forget that anyone can read what you write.

And Mumset is high profile and a ripe picking ground for any researchers from these kinds of programmes - so lots of radio shows, This Morning, Daily Fail, The Grundian etc all pull information and use information from here.

They're not spying on us, they're just doing internet research Grin

I think it makes sense to favour Mumsnet when talking about certain things that affect parents/children or even everyday life.

People tend not to hold back on MN and it's a very diverse forum, even though some people assume it's predominantly white middle class.

Yanbu

But kids walking to school on their own has been discussed on many things recently. A thread here started a few weeks ago because someone had said she let her 7 year old walk on loose women.

It was in the Newspapers, on this morning etc.

So while I think they do trawl mn, it's not the only place this is being talked about.

It isn't unfair they look here. The tone is unfair

Although if they mention 'carcass' being a new insult, I would be immensely happy! Grin

Shock Who lets their 7 year old walk on loose women!

That's just weird Grin

It's not just this show either that does this imo.

I have the local heart station on during the school run in the morning and I quite often think that what they are talking about has come from here because I read a thread during that week about the exact same subject.

Worra you raise an interesting point r.e the assumption that MN is predominantly white middle class. I have wondered about this but don't know how and where I'd find out more about the demographic. I can't imagine starting a thread asking "AIBU to ask if you are white and middle class?"

I've noticed it for years and I have seen it mentioned on here before. I don't really watch it but might catch bits and pieces of it. I also find MW rude to callers and he shouts down others who have an opinion different to his own.

lol at carcass. I'm never going to hear that word in the same way again.

I'd be well chuffed if one of my posts was interesting enough for someone to bung on television.

Would prefer something slightly more intelligent than The Wright Stuff though.

But sadly I don't have any opinions on current events. Must try harder to get some...

They do it all the time.

Don't post anything that you wouldn't be happy being chewed over by MW and whichever bunch of randoms he has on the panel that day.

There was a MN survey many moons past that did have a bit of a look at the demographics. Having a quick search on here reveals it was done in 2011.

I suppose an anonymous survey monkey one would be good to find out.

I'm positive they pull posts from here - I watch it most mornings and a lot of threads come up.
One blatantly came up from MN a while back (something about a clock being on a mantelpiece? Identical to a thread on here. Smile )

There was also one about a wedding dilemma, can't remember exact details as it was a while ago. OP and subsequent posters were shocked and saying the thread should be pulled as it was 'outing' her and shouldn't be allowed Confused
ummm... OP outed herself by putting it online in the first place! Confused

I once had a thread under a different username on TWS. It was about putting children on the organ donation register. It actually showed a screen shot of it and mentioned Mumsnet. He said we were 'potty mouthed mothers with nothing better to do' arsehole I felt a bit famous Grin

He does give us credit when it's a Mumsnet thread though.

(I'm awaiting a heated Wright Stuff debate on trifles any day now Wink

The clock on the mantelpiece was definitely from here, they showed the Op and the post, it was no secret it was MN. In fact IIRC they used it to mock MN in that we had too much time on our hands we were discussing something so dull. Hmm

Today had a screen shot of comments from here too, they do that often. Think sirzy was one (if that show its spelt!) Never me, must be more interesting!

Today wasn't 7 year olds walking to school, it was 4 year olds being walked to class from play ground. Some good examples of the other subjects they've taken from here though.

Now, did they ever cover penis beaker?

I have never seen the Wright stuff, what channel is it on?

I have noticed that sometimes there's been a very active thread here and then the subject is on the news a bit later that week. I assumed that the posters who start those threads are much more plugged in to what's going on in the world/London, and are reacting to events, with news programmes catching up. Maybe I've been underestimating MN posters? Blush
