AIBU?

To think that this is out of order, and there's no shame in being cis

NC as potentially outing.

DD is 17 and gay. She's very active in local LGBT societies and organisations and has campaigned against homophobic bullying in her school. Today she received this email from one of the organisations she's involved with, publicising an event for trans writers.

What's wrong with being cis ffs?! DD has herself been on the receiving end of abuse in the past for being 'transphobic', simply because she's challenged the anti cis opinion which she encounters regularly. This despite the fact that she campaigns for equality and has done since she came out aged 14. She's seriously considering giving up the work she does with various groups because of this attitude, which is all too common. She's even received death threats on Twitter because she's 'evil' enough to think that equality should be just that, and everyone should simply respect everyone else.

I'm livid, she's livid, are we BU?

Cis means cisgender: to be heterosexual and happy with your gender assigned at birth

Goodness no, YANBU at all. That is ridiculously offensive. Does she feel confident to raise it with the organisation?

Your daughter sounds like an incredible young woman, by the way.

Cis is not trans I think

CIs means identifying as the same gender as you appear to be. I appear to be a woman (breast, small etc). I also believe I am a woman.

It is as opposed to transgender when identity and genitals don't match.

Yanbu op, but it seems pretty typical

drink - cis means not trans, it's not about sexuality.

I refuse to acknowledge the definition of a woman as being cis. Therefore, I wouldn't be offended.

Another day, another new term, something new to be offended by.

Report
laffymeal · 17/11/2015 20:21

Genuinely never heard of it before.

Cis means gender binary, straight... As opposed to gender fluid or transsexual.

It's potentially offensive that us 'cis' people are considered boring for our unoriginal lifestyles? Hard to phrase that without sounding like a dick.

I'm fine with being called cis and I'm fine with not being considered interesting for that. I think the LGBTQ folks are just expressing their confidence in themselves by being a bit bolshy in this instance, and I think they're entitled to be sometimes, just like anyone else.

The point of campaigning against any kind of "-ism" should be equality - not superiority, so no, YANBU

Report
GoneAndDone · 17/11/2015 20:23

It seems odd.

But I really hate the word cis and don't feel anyone (trans or not) has the right to apply that ridiculous term to me. I'm a woman, not "cis woman".

Oh ffs. Yes, it's acceptable to make jokes about men where it's not acceptable to make jokes about women. Same with white people vs members of other ethnic minorities, straight people vs gay people, rich people vs poor people and, YES! cis people vs trans people.

I think the implication is that all the trans men and women are cool and hip and intense and self obsessed challenging.

Cis people are boring and square.

Teenagers are often awful - hopefully they will grow up soon.
