To ring in sick

I feel terrible. Headache, my eyes hurt, sore throat, achey muscles. The thought of going to work for 8 hours is really not good.

I know lots of people would still go to work and I feel guilty for not going in if I don't. DH thinks I'm crazy for even considering going in, but I know my colleagues are always in when they're not well. Yet here I am tempted to ring in.

So do you ring in when you're poorly or are you someone who would go in when ill? What do you think of colleagues who ring in sick when you would have gone in?

If it makes any difference I work in an office and was off for 2 days with D & V about 3 months ago. Oh and I'm an on going temp so won't get paid if I don't go in.

So please either give me permission to ring in or kick my arse and tell me to suck it up and get to work.

You sound too ill to be productive at work, so I wouldn't go if I were you. Besides, your colleagues won't want your germs. Hope you recover soon.

I would have some toast, pain killers and go. I find I often feel better with cold type symptoms as the day progresses.
You can leave if not improving.

I wouldn't go if D/V.

Literally laid in bed trying to decide the same thing right now! Sounds like we have the same bug.

My voice has gone and yesterday was agony because I had to constantly talk :( but I hate taking days off because I love my job!

Personally I would go in, but then I'm never sick.
If you don't feel up to it don't go, the company aren't paying you so it won't matter too much to them.

If you're trying to decide whether or not to go in then you're well enough to go in!

I get really cross when someone comes in to work really really unwell, because inevitably we all end up dropping like flies a few days later. I would stay home.

I have the same thing. My throat is on fire and I am hot and cold. This is no normal cold, it's evil! I am lucky enough to be able to collect my laptop and work at home (and will probably be more productive than sitting in a stuffy office and not having to speak).

In most cases, it depends a little bit on your sickness record to be fair, I hate people who need a monthly week off because they have a blocked nose.

However, with nearly no time off before, and the fact that you sound contagious, and too unwell to do anything useful anyway: stay home, rest, and you'll get better quicker.

Fair enough Pottering

little everyone around me has been sat at work with similar things so I'm not too worried about them.

I hate taking days off too because I just feel so guilty especially when other people go to work when they're ill. I'm ready anyway so will probably plough through today. Even though the thought of it is making me feel worse.

If I would spend the day in bed, I'd stay at home. If I'm thinking I could have an easy day, pottering, finishing off the ironing, and catching up on the GBBO final, I'd go in.

Bit of a cold go in, feel terrible then stay at home.

addicted I'm thinking of snuggling up on the settee watching crap television while dozing in and out of sleep. So no housework or catching up on anything.

I know my colleagues are always in when they're not well.

And now you're sick with the same thing those selfish presentee wankers brought into the office! Angry

Going to work when you feel like shit is stupid and selfish. Don't be one of those people.

Hmm only you can be the judge really. If it was me - with a cold I'd probably take some paracetamol and go in to be honest. You'd be amazed how much better a bit of paracetamol can make you feel.

You'd be amazed how much better a bit of paracetamol can make you feel.

AND it makes you completely non-contagious!

Oh no, it doesn't. Hmm

You'll still be contributing to spreading nasty germs around if you have to dose yourself up to go to work.

selfish presentee wankers

bit extreme Bath, its normal practice to go into an office job if you've just got mild/moderate cold symptoms that are treated with a bit of paracetmol. If everyone took a day off for every sniffle/sore throat or headache they woke up with 1/2 our workforce would be off at this time of year! OP could just of easily picked it up at the supermarket.

At my last job we had an attendance bonus. It was ridiculous people were dragging themselves in with raging fevers and some were running off to the loo every five minutes. It was nasty. Management wouldn't send them home it was their choice. The illnesses just went round and round and everyone always just felt like shit.

I think if you know you won't get paid yet still think you should be off you probably should.

There are times when you can cope with going in and time when you're really not up to it and this sounds like on of them. People can criticize colleagues for not going in, but that's not fair if there's a genuine reason. I haven't had any time off for a couple of years, but had a very bad year before that - it's just the way it goes.

Report
KinkyDorito · 13/10/2015 08:28

I read something yesterday that said driving with a bad cold is more dangerous than driving intoxicated - your body is using your glucose supply to fight the cold rather than feed the brain. ('Willpower' Baumeister and Tierney). That hit home for all the times I go in streaming when I should be in bed, having driven there.

If you're going to see me when you get there then please don't bother. Immunocompromised people view those that drag themselves in come what may with a heavy heart.
Your heavy cold is my hospitalisation with complications, so please stay at home, get better, and keep your germs to yourself. (Also, a day on the sofa will do you the world of good!)

DeepBlueLake · 13/10/2015 08:29

Stay off OP, you'll get better quickly by having a day in bed.

If you do go in, then don't moan and groan all day being sick and looking for sympathy etc.

I've had colleagues go in before who should be in bed come in and get f all done all day as they are constantly in the bathroom blowing their nose, making lemsip tea, coughing etc.

I would go in but then I'm always worried I would be more I'll later in the winter and not want to take time off then as I already had. I may overthink a bit.
