My Mum started with bleeding that lasted 30+ days at a time. She saw a gynae who suggested fitting a coil. She had this fitted in Aug 14. The bleeding continued pretty much daily for 6m (Feb 15). She asked someone in the gyane clinic (I think) who said it was normal after a coil was fitted. My Mums nurse was horrified when my Mum told her this and said it should have been checked immediately. Cue a referral for checking. They found "speckles" on my Mums cervix after a camera procedure (I think in May 15) and wanted to do further investigations. She had a biopsy (approx July 15). She rang to chase up her results and was told that her consultant/Dr was having a meeting about what she had seen with her colleagues what she had seen during the camera appointment was different to what the biopsy was showing.

The next time she called she was told her Dr was on leave and a letter detailing the results should be dictated on her return. After chasing it several times she has been told the receptionist is on holiday, it's waiting to be signed etc. She has also been given tit bits of information over the phone, whilst being told "I canot tell you want's in the letter or what procedure you will be having" from the receptionist. She has been told she has high grade pre cancerous cells. She is now getting where she's ringing 2 times a week because she just wants to know what the bloodyhell is going on and what her treatment is going to be.

AIBU in that waiting since July to October (so far at least!) 15 to get the results is taking the piss and she should make a formal complaint?

Contact PALS, now. They will help you, give you information on how to proceed, how to get the information and what to do about a proper complaint.

Find them online www.nhs.uk/Service-Search/Patient%20advice%20and%20liaison%20services%20(PALS)/LocationSearch/363

There will also be leaflets n your GP surgery, hospital, etc

Flowers for your mum OP.

This is a shit way to be treated. No advice other than ourblanche above. I hope this gets sorted out for her asap.

That does sound far too long, no wonder you and your mum are annoyed. I would imagine if she has pre-cancerous cells on the cervix and also a problem with bleeding she will benefit from a hysterectomy and removal of cervix - will sort both problems. Obviously this depends on her age etc but I would try asking if this is the sort of treatment they are contemplating, see if you can get any more answers. Hope it's sorted for you soon x

It does sound like really poor treatment - PALS is a good starting point. As an example of how it could/should have gone - I had abnormal bleeding that didn't stop and went to the GP on a Saturday morning. The next Thursday, I was being biopsied. The following Wednesday I received a letter with the outcome.

I am just astounded that they have let it go on so long. I have told my Mum to contact PALs, or I'll do it on her behalf if she isnt happy to do it herself. And to say that she had a normal smear test in January 14.... Glad IANBU

She's spoken with PALs who have said they will investigate and call hr back on Monday.

Her GP is useless.

Call the practice manager at the GP and ask.what is being done to chase an outcome. Ask for a follow up call from her/him or a GP with an update and refuse any hint that you should be chasing the hospital yourself. Be very clear you are expecting the GP to be your proactive advocate.

In the meantime also contact the pals dept at the hospital and ask them to look into this urgently.

If no useful response or movement in a couple of days send an email to your local ccg and nhs England (copied to the practice as well as hospital pals and comms teams) asking that they urgently raise a quality alert about both the practice and GP.

I know it breaks MN rules but for those who are interested, my Mum got a call from PALS yesterday who said that there is a letter in the post... We shall see. She was told this 2 weeks ago.
