AIBU?

That the "popular" posters on here are often rude.

I won't mention names but some of them seem to be popular for....not a lot really. Certain people come to mind who have a reputation for being straight talking and funny but most of the time I don't see it. I find them rather disagreeable tbh. Is it just me?

Yes. It's just you.

Yeah, I think it's just you tbh. I haven't noticed anyone being particularly popular (I recognise names of people who post a lot). Disagreeable and aibu kind of go hand in hand.

Rudeness is quite often funny tbh.

I think you should name names Grin

I honestly never know who is meant to be 'popular' and who isn't. Just because a poster posts a lot doesn't make them popular. Everyone might be very Hmm about them for all anyone knows.

You do realise you're about to get 'popular posters' (and their entourage who want to be popular) being rude to you now don't you? Message boards like MN are like school, you'll always have the popular kids so you can either try to become a part of that 'crowd' or ignore them.

Oh and yes - name names. If you're going to post a bitchy thread then at least be upfront about it.

'Frequent' isn't the same as 'popular'.

There are posters who are here a lot who are rude. They generally get challenged IME.

There are posters who are here a lot who are erm direct, but honest. They made divide opinion but generally are respected for shooting straight.

There are posters who are here a lot who are almost always lovely.

Not a great deal of difference to how it falls out in real life tbh.

No, I agree that some do get away with being nasty to a greater extent than "unknowns" do.

It depends what you mean by 'popular.' Some posters are well known for being rude, but I wouldn't say they were popular.

teeththief I've been on MN for years and years and I don't region use what you are saying at all

'Entourage' on MN? Grin

I won't name names because I wouldn't like to single people out but there are popular ones on here, the ones who often get talked about. There was a thread once where someone was asking who their favourite posters were, some of these (the ones I mean) were mentioned.

But rainy that's the same in RL surely? You'll put up with occasional rudeness from someone you know well but probably won't from someone you've met once.

Report
catfordbetty · 08/10/2015 12:59

Perhaps they are not popular, straight talking or funny in real life?

dancerchancer · 08/10/2015 13:00

Youbastard not bitchy at all, just saying what I've seen, it would only be bitchy if I did name names.

How would you know if someone was popular? Frequent posters perhaps, but their popularity remains a mystery.

dancer but why would it bother you if they are popular?

To become royalty popular on MN a site with millions and millions of users you need to post all the time, be really witty/clever/helpful/give specialised advice and never name change.

It's a lot of effort. Good luck to them.

Personally I quite like seeing long running posters, which is a tiny bit hypocritical as I NC every month. Grin

It's not just you, these threads crop up all the time.

I disagree with you though.

Goady post.

In my experience some of the rudest posters are cowards who name change to be unpleasant then go back to their ever so sweet normal user name afterwards.

I don't really know who the "popular" posters are either. Sometimes a poster will be described on a thread as "well loved and respected" and I think, "really?" not in sceptical way, just in a bemused way.

ServingSuggestion · 08/10/2015 13:10

I think 'notorious' is the word you're looking for, not popular Wink
