AIBU?

to be pissed off with the assumption that we all have fucking iPhones?!

Some of us cant afford them, some of us prefer android, some of us just (shock horror) want to call and text so dont need a smart phone at all!

So why is all the latest tech geared towards a phone that is outsold by android phones 5 to 1?! Surely it makes more sense for business to use the Android platform on the basis that so many more people use it than to narrow their market to iphone users only?

I bank with Natwest, I would like to be able to use my phone to pay for things in the event that I have forgotten my purse, but I cant because I choose to use an Android phone.

This is leaving aside the whole thing about why iphones are seen as so wonderful. I used one for a while, they are counter intuitive and obscenely expensive. I will stick with Samsung Galaxy thank you!

Absolutely agree. I prefer Android and am sick of the whole "world revolves around iphones" thing

I don't think it is, anymore. There isn't much of anything for the iphone that isn't also available on android. I don't do apple, never have, and have never been at a loss.

I agree too. I don't like iPhones, and refuse to be an iSheep. Much prefer Android.

I hated the iPhone went back to android, Craved an iPhone because so many places cater to iPhone and not android.
We hired a fiat 500, which had Bluetooth that played music from your phone, the buggered thing would only connect to iPhone.weve kind of beaten the system by having an iPhone and 2 androids in our house, we all swap as the mood takes us but it is diabolical the amount iPhones cost, and the phone networks play on it.
My phone bill is an extra £10.00 per month and I have less Internet. They won't give iPhone users unlimited but DH is sat happily with his unlimited data and pays less!

Betty, you can get unlimited data on a iphone contract with Three in the UK. Mind you, for that a 6s will cost a over £50 per month for 2 years, plus an up front payment!

A developer explained this to me a while ago.

Android is not all one thing in quite the same way that iPhones are. For an app to be available on Android, it has to be tested on every different phone and tablet before it can be released to market. This is expensive and time consuming for the app/software developers, which is why new apps generally come to market on iPhone first, because it is one thing to test and immediately covers 20% of the market.

OP post totally contradicts itself.

'I don't need a smart phone' in which case why do you even care.

Basically the paying apps are geared towards people who love their technology a lot and mainly buy iPhones because they were the first smart phones and are compatible with iPads and iMacs etc. Its a geek thing.

I'm not techno savvy at all but I get that the iPhone is just very good so therefore I have one. The main reasons I have one is that's it's compatible with other things I have and the glass screen is very thick, much thicker than other phones which crack far sooner.

Err.. no I dont!

I said that some of us cant afford them, some of us dont want them, some of us dont need them. "Us" being non iPhone owners for whatever reason. I also said "I would like to be able to use my phone to pay for things in the event that I have forgotten my purse, but I cant because I choose to use an Android phone."

It's so annoying! Complete first world problem, but there's a game I've always wanted to play, and it's only on iphone. Every time I renew my contract I consider an iphone, but I never go for it. I got a new phone last month, a Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge. Love it.

The first world is divided into iHaters and iSheep.

I'm an iSheep. I just can't help myself. I know they are over priced and I know that I can get an android that does everything a million times better but I can't stop buying iStuff. Im sitting here happily surrounded by my little shiney iFamily.

Perhaps you should consider joining us Wink

ps, I am joking and I wouldn't dream of putting naff random 'i's in front of words in real life Blush

Baaaaaa!

DH has an android thing. I can't even work out how to text on it. It's totally counter intuitive to me. But I have been an iSheep since the 3. And I don't regret it for a moment!

I pay £18/month for my luffly iPhone 6 something or other. But I purchased my handset outright from the Apple Store.

Most things on MN are first world problems because it's where we live, not quite sure of the point of that statement being bandied around to shut down every other thread. Completely pointless.

If you really cared you'd have an iPhone and that's all there is to it really.

Snap. I like in scotland where signal... no matter what phone you have is fleeting at best. I resent when companies suggest just do this on ur phone? That can mean going up to the top of the big hill to get a signal Angry

I have an iPhone because only iPhone has an acceptable level of accessibility. Talkback on android will never come close to voiceover, so I will always have iPhone.

Plus once you've started down one route it becomes more expensive to switch because all your apps etc are on your current platform.

No I wouldnt because I wont pay ££££ for the handset outright or stupid amounts monthly on a contract for one.

I am not an iHater, each to their own, I personally dont get on with them so I dont buy them. But it does piss me off that every new "thing" hits the iphone first.

That said, the explanation that alibabs gave above does make perfect sense. Which has pissed me off even more :o

Wannabe I think accessibility is a different issue though. My father is deaf and partially sighted so finding tech that works for him is a real case of trial and error and then sticking with whatever is the least crap works best. And if iphone works for you best then obviously you are going to stay with it for the fact that is makes your life easier rather than brand loyalty.

But I see your point about apps, presumably some will have been paid for and yes, it would be a PITA to try and change over.

I'm an iSheep. Apple stuff just works. On the other hand, DP is an Android lover and his stuff never works. This may be because he can't leave anything alone and tries to modify everything Grin

But yes, Alibabs sums it up - its all about the quick wins.

Always been an igirl. Switched to Android last year as it was cheaper and discovered you definitely get what you pay for. It's a bag of shit and I can't wait for the end of my contract.

Yabu. Really stupidly unreasonable.
You can't strop about something you have a choice over when you are choosing to get the thing that doesn't have what you want!

It's like buying a flat and then getting the arse because you don't get to choose stair carpets. If you want stair carpets buy a place with stairs!

That's probably a shite analogy but it's nearly 3am and the best I can do!

What are you talking about they have Android Pay which is the same thing. If it's not accepting your bank, it's likely a bank problem and not the phone. Or... it's a problem with things reaching the UK slower.

But as far as everything being geared towards iPhones, that's fading pretty quick here in the US. Even though the new Galaxy Edge is just as expensive as an iPhone, the split is still roughly 50/50, so it's getting more and more common to release for both. I started with android because it was cheaper, I stuck with it because I don't like change I don't want to have to rebuy and refind all my apps when I can just go to the Play store and DL them all on my new phone in a few seconds.

iPhones use a different code language than android, and you still have to test for each hardware you release to (iPad, iPhone, Kindle). However, the Android phones all come in different sizes and hardware builds so an app may be buggy on one, as PP above said about multiple testing. The other main reason developers target apple products for the most part is that apple users are -surprise- more likely to spend money on apps. So it's easier to build and it's easier to make money.

But for the most part, unless it's an independent company with limited resources, it's going to be made for both. At least over here in the US.

Pandermote, Apple stuff is definitely not a geek thing. I know a lot of IT science and tech people, none own any Apple products, all android/ raspberry pi/ ubuntu or linux as they are more customizable.
